Well talk about an emotional roller coaster for the last 18 hrs or so ... My best friends neighbour lost his jack russell down a 300 ft mine shaft late yesterday afternoon as he went off chasing a rabbit. The fire brigade was called but as darkness had already descended they felt there was too much risk to try to put a rig up to winch someone down at that point , but true to their word 3 fire crews arrived this morning and carried out an operation to try to retrieve the little guy , not knowing if he was dead or alive a fireman was winched down at about 10.30 this morning and found the wee man 180ft down on a ledge , still alive but with an injured leg , lucky little guy is now recovering in his kitchen , warming up and having a much needed meal....i'm sure it's an experience he nor his owner will forget in a hurry.

OMG i lost mine today he was found sitting out side my Mums house in the middle of the road stupid dog, Not to mention my Dad who left the gate open!! Lucky they live on a very quite lane, & also lucky no cats were about!! hope the little dogs all better soon x

Bloomin dogs who'd have them hey! Lucky little lad, glad he is safe and warm now, the weather down your way is pretty horrific today isnt it?
I had a lurcher fall down a mine shaft once, we didnt call the fire brigade but went out first light with some friends and the lightest and smallest of us was volunteered to be roped down...erm...me! Couldnt focus on anything other than getting the dog back up in one piece, he was totally unscathed and once I saw him pulled up safely into the daylight way above my head I suddenly realised I was a very long way down a very small mine shaft and that I'm very claustrophobic! LOL Silly things we do hey!

Are you bonkers Mrs - the shafts down here are around 300ft deep , most have water in the bottom so it was lucky the little man didn't reach the bottom! About 12 months ago 2 border terriers went down one and it was about 5 days before anyone put 2 + 2 together and realized where they might be , they were both fished out alive too , plus in the past it has been known for hounds to go down. These shafts are ring fenced to stop the likes of us going down but i think they should have small grid mesh around really then these things wouldn't happen at all.

Quite possibley bonkers yes! These are narrow vertical ochre mines the one the dog and subsequently me went down was only about 150ft, I was stood in the bottom and totally amazed how on earth he had not broken anything, I could barely stand on the jagged rocks in the bottom, it took some serious balancing to get him suitably tied in a fashion I was happy that he was going to stay level all the way up (he was about 35 kilos and apart from anything else would have killed me if he fell back down once they started pulling him up!)
ETS these are fenced with a poxy bit of chicken wire...that a deer must have bounced over with him following, the deer missed the mine, dog didnt!
