Jack Russell x Whippet Puppies...

Ha ha, fast height dog?? We just got a JRT cross working cocker :-)

My dog Wibble is our height dog, jack russell x fox terrier (although he's bigger than we thought!) We were expecting about 10", got him measured and he was a healthy 12"! Luckily, we've been practising over 12" so it wasn't a problem! :)

I've seen a few whippets recently and REALLY like them, but love my terriers, so would want another one. Then saw a jack russell x whippet and thought "I HAVE TO HAVE IT!"

Did see a very nice jack russell x collie racing on Sunday, part of Bassetts club. VERY nice dog! We were admin'ing for div 11, and were cheering them on both afternoon and morning simply because of that dog and a little JRT they had :D

Just had a look, lurchers and greyhounds are too big for what I want really :( plus their ads say they won't re-home to someone working full time! :( there are some lovely dogs on there though!

lurchers come in all sizes, technically a jack russell x whippet is a lurcher - you may just need to wait for the right one. most of them will home to a full time working home if you have provision in place to go in for a while you are at work

My mum comes over to mine to take Wibble for a walk at lunchtime, do you think that'd class as enough?

Lurcher = jack russell x whippet? Really? hmmm!

No it doesn't technically - a lurcher is a greyhound x collie but gets extended to other sighthound crosses. Unfortunately many mongrels get labelled as lurchers.

in which case there would be no such thing as a smooth lurcher surely?

i know many people who have bred, shown, raced and worked lurcher for many many years and they are not often a first cross and almost always include more than just greyhound/collie,by your reckoning a collie/whippet is not a lurcher nor is a saluki/collie. most these days have some bull blood in them though often it is just a tiny bit way back

I don't altogether agree with you there, to my mind a sight hound x anything else is a lurcher. Brian Plummer said so!
My mum has a fat little thing that was wastage from a whippet x staffie litter, bred to lamp foxes but she was too solid.

Was disagreeing with S4Sugar there, not you Twiggy. I have a saluki x whippet x maybe terrier and she is as lurchery as could be.

This makes for interesting reading, but now has me royally confused! As I'm after a terrier x whippet (to hopefully get something smaller) - but they're rare to find puppies, I could look for a lurcher which may have terrier crossed into it?

Also, silly question, but heights: some lurchers/whippets say 22" to the shoulder. Is that from the ground? As my terrier measures at 12" from the shoulder (for flyball)??? Forgive me for being blonde!

yes it is height to the shoulder.

oneof the most popular terriers is a bedlington terrier x whippet, they are hairy and can be around 12 inches sometimes smaller, some people who breed them try to reduce the size further by putting yorskshire terrier and/or jack russel in the breeding. showing and racing lurchers is divided by height the same as agility-so some people like them small as there are less in a class

Long dog crosses with other longdogs = longdogs. Longdog x collie = lurcher. Crossing a lurcher to another longdog or lurcher = lurcher. Bedlingtons are considered within the scope of lurcher/longdog ( sort of a coated whippet) and a whippet has terrier ancestry.
Unknown breeding gives a mutt - which may be of lurcher type.
There is no reason a whippet x JRT should stay under 12" unless it inherits achrondplasia.

Height is measured from the top of the shoulder (where the withers are on a horse) to the ground.

At Holkham Game fair I saw a pair of the most stunning lurchers - by my definition! One was jack russell x whippet and the other was her son and Dad was a collie. Neither would have been much over 12" I would have thought, my lurcher is 23" to the shoulder and they would have been half the size of her.

Lurcher link has a pair of little whippety x jrt's that need a bit of tlc, may not be suitable but thought I'd mention they do consider full-time workers if dogs suitable http://www.lurcherlink.org/llink/forum/viewtopic.php?t=88998
There are few other lurcher specific rescues and scruples whippet rescue takes in lurchers too.

Oh blimey they're adorable! I'd SO take the male, but they want them homed together :( hope they find a good home!

They maybe considering homing them separately, they put him up as available to foster alone recently as too many males in, but he may need to live with another dog as he's timid.

My two girls are whippet x Patterdale and whippet/JRT/Bedlington. They are both 18/19" tall and lovely.

Scruples whippet rescue have some possible whippet x JRT pups just in ??

My exact thought too! We have a whippet running at starters in my club but it does everything so daintily that it is really slow, but I would love one.

Those pups on lurcher link are in a foster home near me. I already have a 7" height dog, might try to persuade my team members to have a look!
