My boy has been off work for 99.9% of the last year due to a sore back.... Well over the past few months after endless, Cranio/Chiro/Physio and natural balance shoeing his back has been lovely and soft and pain free... so have done a bit of kamikazee lunging - and he's loved it - he doesn' 'do' lunging - he's hooned around the field with the donkies and just generally been happy, rolling and playing...

So last weekend I took him for a little hack 15-20mins, he was a nutter but back was fine...

So this weekend I did similar - this time 30mins... he was a fruit cake, jogged the WHOLE way
crazy.gif
and threw his head around.... but thoroughly enjoyed himself...

Well I got back to the yard and decided to keep him up there for the rest of the day - free walk and access to stables... back was fine when I untacked etc... anyways I went back to put him to bed and went to touch his back and he nearly took my head off!!!
blush.gif
....

So I've finally got to the point..... there is a small (size - just larger than a fifty pence piece) area on his back, just where the back of the saddle would sit, of sticky hair... it seems to be weeping - however there is no wound..

What is it?

Could he have an abscess?!
frown.gif

I'm going to give the vet a call in a bit and see what she thinks...

I've been awake most the night worrying - he's as bright as a button and is mobile and unless you 'press' the area he is fine.

(well done for getting so far!!)

[/ QUOTE ]I don't think it's a bite - there is no 'abrasion/hole/abnormal bits' on skin.. it's literally just weeping

[/ QUOTE ]Thanks chick, no he doesn't have much luck, what with having strangles, being shot in the leg, scratching his cornea, having to box rest due to swollen leg. *sighs*

His back may have slightly changed shape, has he dropped / gained condition? Have you had his saddle checked recently? Is it pinching his shoulders? Where abouts is the sore?

[/ QUOTE ]The sore is at the rear of the saddle area.... so under the cantle (sp?) it's on one side and is weepy... he hasn't really changed condition wise/shape wise, my saddle was checked back in november - saddler advised until he is back in proper work not to re-check as he won't change shape dramitically - and to use sheepskin a pad (which I did at weekend) ... hmmm
frown.gif

Oh and saddle is fine over withers - hence the pad - so that it doesn't sit ON them as he need to build muscle again.

It could be a warble. Its about time for them to come out, but if your worming is up to scratch (im assuming so) cant be - ivermectin kills them.
Otherwise, could be an ingrown hair caused by a bit of friction somewhere.
In either case hot towels and bit of squeezing will do the trick. Ingrown hairs can be very very sore, ive never seen/known a warble. Should be fine in a couple of days, but you will need to eliminate what caused it in the first place.

[/ QUOTE ]Thanlks vicijp... squeezing is going to be out of the question I think... he nearly took my head off cos I LOOKED at it yesterday!!

Am going to try and hibi - with warm water and apply a healing gel.

(Spoke to vet and she suggested this a good starting point)

Will try the hot towel on it after the hibi - to try and draw it out!! Eeek!!

I wish I could advise (the only thing that I can think of would be that something had got underneath the saddle pad - piece of straw or something - and rubbed him as you were riding. Which may account for the lively behaviour, too?). But just want to say that I really feel for you. You have had so much bad luck and worry with him.

[/ QUOTE ]Thanks hun - the lively behaviour is down to not being ridden for teh past year.. he's always loved his hacks and was just sssooo excited!! could have been a factor - however he's clipped and had a jolly good groom so shouldn't have had anything there - however it's certainly a consideration!!

Poor chap

Donkey has sweat lumps, I keep her back as clean as I can and keep her saddle cloths clean too to minimise further lumps

This happened to a horse I had a few years ago. I bought her with a months trial. After the first couple of rides she got the same thing as you described, I thought at first my saddle didnt fit and borrowed her tack which her owner didnt seem keen at lending me at first but it turned out she hadnt been ridden for 12 mths due to injury and I was the first to ride her. Nice of them to tell me!!! After a few days off I used a sheepskin under her saddle and it stopped then when I bought her I bought a new saddle and used a normal saddle cloth. She was an anglo arab who rubbed very easily even from my reins and I put the back marks to her not having had a sddle on for so long as it stopped once she 'hardened' up.

Had this with my TB mare - it turned out that the nylon binding round the sheepskin numnah had caused a friction burn (as she likes to swing those TB hips when walking!).
Changed to numnahs made entirely of cotton/entirely of sheepskin with no dodgy binding and problem cured!
Hope this helps

What did the vet say?

[/ QUOTE ]She agreed that Hibiscrubbing and applying a antiseptic/healing gel was a good plac eto start but if it was still weepy in a few days she'd come out.

It seems to have 'dried' a bit this morning so perhaps it was some sort of friction burn of the saddle cloth!?!

Am still hibi'ing and gel'ing so will see.

Thanks for asking Sooty. x

That's ok! It sounded such a strange thing I wanted to know what it was. I am glad it doesn't sound too serious though, maybe just an infected follicle or something. They can be excruciating! Hope he is ok - and enjoying his treatment! It sounds very relaxing, all that back treatment. More Hibiscrub nurse!

[/ QUOTE ]Yeah maybe - really don't know - think it's more like a friction burn TBH as it is a raised area but with no abrasions... size of fifty pence... the whole thing was weeping?!?
