Have to say having sat in the judges box at Arena Uk and watched all of it i'm not at all convinced how much benefit it is to horses. The courses weren't big but very spooky and twisty and a lot of horses (maybe just not been out since last season) started off spooky, improved but then seemed to get worse rather than better. There was also a lot of crap riding which didn't help but just not sure how good it is for horses. Def good for the outing and to get jumping but i wouldn't worry yourself about getting in 2 classes etc. Makesure you've practiced all elements of it as that was what obviously hadn't been done this time.
They do the same course at each venue and there is a bounce with a water tray at the first part then 4 strides round a corner to an upright, most people made a mess of that. Also a lot of the intro horses didn't like a narrow stile fence in the SJ part. Skinny, corner, rolltop and box fence for the XC and one on an angle which some really went for an missed and otehrs went a longer way to jump it straight.
Think i would aim to get there really early and watch a good few to see where they're going wrong as it was the same mistakes over and over!
Boss if you prefer Brooms do an simular comp but it involves dressage as well. £20 to enter.
Ok it's not affli but it's cheaper and you have the whole of the petplan arena so can really get going on the XC bit. They are usually every fortnight.
We can do the jumping bit, if is loosely interpreted to also include clambering. The style thing completely defeats us, and as Lec so eloquently put it to me recently, why pay £25 so that someone can criticise you!!! nuff said.
I did it last year, I enjoyed it, thought it was great fun!!
I know what youre saying about it not being ideal for most horses but Moon is in her element when theres lots to look at and think about so I'm hoping she'll take to it
