what it's based on? Rider and horse, horse only, rider only or just who you are?

Just a pondering really as know 2 people heading towards the finals - one who is probably one of the tidiest and smoothest riders I've ever seen and the other who is effective at times but style varies considerably - yet the latter recieved better style marks

Am i right in thinking that the style mark is a penalty conversion percentage (kinda like a dressage score) or is it literally the lower the mark out you've given the better the style?

i really dont know what the style marks are based on in practise though in theory they are - rhythm of canter, style of jump, clear and smooth transition between SJ and XC phase, neat and tidy rider, secure lower leg and solid jumping position etc etc -

the lower the mark the better

unfortunately in my opinion the JAS style marks are very bias towards known names but oh well

Hi,

I am new to this forum and the JAS competition, I did it for the first time last week, I have my score sheet so I can tell you what they mark you on; there are 10 marks each with a maximum of 6 so 60 in total, the catorgies are

RIDER
-General style and position
-communiation and contact
-riders aids
-arena craft and judgement
HORSE
-Technique
-Outlook and attitude
-Quality of pace and impulsion
HORSE/RIDER COMBINATION
-Rhythm
-Balance
-Overall impression

I got 52 out of 60 which gave me a style mark of 8 and a first place! any time or jumping faults are added to the style mark and the lowest score wins. I'm off to the finals on sunday so fingers crossed, though i know i don't stand a chance against the professionals its fun having a go!

I think Yogi Breisner is one of the judges at the final, not sure who else.

Wow AimeeC, 8 for style is amazing!! When I went, no-one got less that 10, and that included some 'names'.

You're obviously a VERY stylish pair!!

Lots of good luck for the final, you go girl!!!

At Towerlands one of the 'names' got a 7 for style despite having a run ot, 2 down and having to come back to trot 3 times during the round.

So, she couldn't ride lines and combinations, the horse obviously wasn't neat and tidy with it's legs and there was no maintained rhythm or change of pace.

She did have the right 'name' though!!!!!
