Anyone know how the JAS scoring works? All looks a bit confusing to me! Am planning on doing a couple but think it might be a good plan to understand how it works first!!!!!

You get scores out of 8 (I think) for different things- one set for the rider, one for the horse. Things like position, effective aiding, horse's way of going etc.

It's rather like a glorified showing competition and the same names win all the time. If you can produce a neat and tidy round you should do well. It's not for those of us who tend to chance it a little!!

Judges will slate me and Hen then, but it's for the experience, not the winning! It is an outing that is not West Wilts unaff dressage or clear round!

You wear xc stuff or jacket?

Xc stuff but no need for Body protector.
I do it for the fun and it's nice to jump skinnies. I found the PN very easy and novice quite tricky so it's hard to do two classes. Plus its really expensive!!

Well there are 3 I could go to so will do PN first and then probably novice at the other two. Don't think I'll do two classes, she doesn't jump well in second class, she doesn't make any effort! Can only ever do one round wherever I go! Always seems a long way to go for one 2 minute round!

You wear flashy XC gear (preferably pink or baby blue with silver stars) and you trot round before you start with the horse verging on overbent - but it is fun, especially if you're just watching

I think it helps if you *nearly* fall off, it shows determination.

You are marked out of 6 for things like ringcraft, horse, rider etc. You then get 50 bonus points if you have a famous surname. If you want to compete in the most fixed, biased, expensive, waste of time event ever - go for it.

It is the same course at every venue

Hi i think you should have a go at it, planning on doing west wilts and maybe Hartpury. I did it at west wilts last year and somehow won the intro and PN qualifiers, however it is a different story at the finals, I got 6th in the intro and 22nd in the PN! horse went as well at the final but it was def the names that got the top spots, however i do have £100 in training vouchers and it was a good practice for jumping corners and skinnies. Wont bother with the final again this year i doubt (thats if i qualify!) the names dont tend to do the Intro but more the PN and Novice which is what i will have to do this year as Frankie has points now. Good luck and i might see you at west wilts!

Rules to do well at JAS

1) Be trained at some point by Yogi Breisner
2) Have been on a pony, junior or young rider team
3) Have a refusal or nearly fall off - it shows guts and that you do make your own horses rather than having them bought for you
4) Smile at the judge especially if you have been trained by them the week before
5) Expect no helpful comments on your sheet. It may have cost £25 but it is for fun not to help.
6) Do not feel suicidal at the end when you have terrible marks because you are in the majority.
7) Ideal mount is an old JA pony who is fast and careful!
