Does anyone else have a horse like this.

Beau is, shall we say, quite possessive of me and my OH. Whenever I bring him in, if another horse comes over to the gate, he will chase them off.

I bring both Beau and Lance in together every day, Lance comes in first as he is field boss, and Beau has now learned not to challenge him at the gate, but he does challenge him in the field, trying to be boss.
Lance has been the field boss for 12 yrs.

Anyway today when OH was giving Beau a scratch, another horse dared to walk in our direction, and off Beau went after her.

Then Lance decided to pop over and that was it, let the battle commence!

Ive never known a horse like it, Beau is a total lamb for me, an absolute angel, he never challenges me.

Is it an age thing do you think? He is 6 and only been here for 5 months.

They get on great together Beau and Lance, graze together, groom eachother.
He gets on super with the other horses unless Im around.

Anyway a vid showing todays antics, first seeing the horse off, then Lance: (at the end)

LOL at song.

We never feed or give treats in the field, so its not a food thing, we wrent bringing him in, we had just put him out 5 mins prior, and I personally dont give him any affection at all in the field, yet he acts this way over me the most.

Boys!

Funny video great soundtrack - he is very protective of u isnt he. Looks like he just likes to be centre of attention!!

Have seen horses herd each other off like this but it is usually over food so i guess it is quite peculiar!

LOL thats what he reminds me of, a 17.3hh dog!

I fel sorry for the other horses but all he does is chase them, there is only Lance he gets into scraps with, but thats because Lance wont back down.

ho hum!

Think it's quite common for horses to be jealously attached to 'Mum'. I've got 2 mares, either of whom will fend off all others when I'm in the field. The problems occur if they're both in the same field. I have to be careful not to get caught between them, 'cos they fight. It's very flattering! One of them, my broodmare, will even deny her foal access to me, which is a bit extreme.

I have a livery with a horse who acts similar to Beau.

He was in with Oliver and Dinker and I was so worried that Oliver or the livery horse would get hurt as there were times when neither seemed keen to back down.

I removed Oliver from the field and gave him individual turnout. Felt it was safer for everyone - horses as well as me and my livery. He seems happy in his own corner of the world and can still interact over the fences with the others. Far more settled that way.

Bears the same with me if Buddie comes near me when im cuddling bear he gets so jealous or if i give Buddie a hug bear will be there like a shot and start biting him and tells him off!!! i think its quite nice in a way!! atleast you know they love you!!

My horse is exactly the same. I find it sooooo embarrassing when other liveries are about because he pulls these really evil faces and runs at the other horses. Again its not a food thing and he has done it since I bought him as a 4 yr old!

My older horse, J, is out in a field off 3; J, my 3yo and another horse.
He is very very jealous of my 3yo and is absolutely horrid to him if he even dares come and say hello when J is having a fuss ... or even if I am just in the field.
He doesn't act like that if I make a fuss of the horse I don't own, equally he doesn't act like it if someone else gives the 3yo a fuss and not him.

J is just a spoilt brat and doesn't wish to share his mum!

My gelding is the same, but my mare couldn't care less! My lad will physically block the way between me and another horse, and tries to stop me leaving the field if I've been up to see him. He then stands watching me, looking all sad, as I walk off! In the stable, if I dare to fuss another horse, he just about takes the door off its hinges! Like you, I've never known a horse behave like this. Suppose it's quite sweet really!!
