Would you?

Do you?

Thinking to deter from eating a temporary wheat straw bed..... do you have to wait between putting the solution on the straw (ie- allowing it to dry) before putting the hoss to bed?

I am slightly concerned that he may still eat the bed and he may get sick from the Jeyes Fluid.

Your experiences please!

TIA

What about a less toxic solution? Maybe something foul tasting, made up into a solution and sprayed over, for example mustard or pepper? Then you wouldn't have to worry if he did eat it?

I used to dilute Jeyes Fluid in a watering can with a sprinkler top and literally just water the top of the straw randomly. Seemed to work. Horse certainly didn't eat straw afterwards!! I think it would taste revolting!

I've used this with great success for a hungry cob!

He didn't eat it again it worked a treat!

Always used it (diluted) years ago with no adverse effect, horses definitely didn't eat bedding anymore, it probably isn't "PC" to use it now but if I used straw and horsey was eating it I'd use it again

I would advise against. A friend did this for years and her horse was still inclined to pick at the bedding. The horse eventually developed symptoms of poisoning and died. No link to the jeyes fluid was made but I always wondered.

Sounds interesting....I work for the company that makes it and I deal with customer complaints and I don't recall this one!

my mare had this done when i kept her on full livery years ago. personally when i look back on it, it wouldve been better to feed her more hay so to keep her from eatin her bedding.
its not a very nice thing to do, surely changing the bedding would be a better idea?

I have used watered-down Jeyes fluid with a couple of my previous horses and never had any problems

I never found that feeding more hay was the answer to the problem myself - they'd still eat all the hay then start on the bed

Yep, my girl eats her straw even if its been sprayed with jeyes, she seems to quite like it too. Feeding more hay doesn't help either, she has 3 huge haynets & 1 big haylage net per night and still eats her bed, most of the time before she's finished on the nets.

i dilute and spray liberally - and well, really work it through the bed not just on top. then i leave it a while for the air to clear b4 putting pony back in. seems to deter her - well i dont see her eating it anyway.

not sure what ratio i dilute exactly i just make it up as i go in the spray bottle, but its enough to smell when i spray. no point just spraying slightly smelly water that wouldnt stop my fatty.
