had a good look at one of theirs at Brigstock, it looked very nice and they don't seem silly money. Just wanted any experiences, really, thankyou... they all look good when they're new!
Someone I know has bought one. they seem OK for the money but it is only 4 weeks old and the partitions are rusting already. I'd like to see what it looked like in a years time. I'd check whether they are Glassonite or not (avoid glasonite).
umm, why "avoid glasonite" please, memo? my box is 11 yrs old, glasonite, and still looks as good as new.
TripleS&H, i'm going for 3 horse, day living + a few extras, same as i have now really. been and looked at Thorpe boxes, very impressed. not sure who else to compare with, but was nosing at boxes yesterday and the JM one seemed good.
The trouble with Glasonite is that it is a very thin sheet of alluminium covering plywood. if a horse kicks it, it can fracture (you get little star like fractures). Then it can let in moisture and it warps. Glasonite can also leak around the windows too.
Yes that was what I was told re glassonite and I had a similar experience with my lorry. Where tiny cracks appeared from hedge scratches / small dents the 'filling' in the glasonite 'sandwich' soaked up all the moisture and it went rotten in places. I din't think Glassonite was made up of aluminium...more like a fibre glass type product with ply inbetween? Think Ali lined with ply is preferable or so I was told when I had mine repaired.
I spoke to someone recently who had bought one as I was looking at them too - they seem quite good value. His experience was that although the build quality was quite good if he had another he would source the truck for it to be built on as he had had to take it back several times to have things fixed.
The ply has a really really thin coat of aluminium which is the problem, it won't withstand a lot of kicking etc. We had a glasonite lorry and a horse stood kicking on it and split it so that a coachbolt pulled through. Then this let moisture in. 2mm aluminium is supposed to be best, any thinner and you can see ripples.
