I have a difficult decision to make and I am wondering about everyones experiences.

I have worked with horses since I left uni and Im becoming a bit disillousioned with it after a few interesting employers

I have been offered a full time office job on a decent wage and flexi time which would allow me to do all the things I want to, lessons, competing, new car. I would have bank holidays off plus paid holidays and the chance of overtime, but I would be stuck in an office *bleugh* :p and the commute is a bit of a nightmare

I have also been offered a job at a yard I used to work on and I loved it there on more money than last time. I would have lots of riding opportunities, a job I absolutely love but less money, longer hours, harder work and not as much opportunity to do things with my own horse.

I am really confused, I think I know which way I should go but my head and heart arent agreeing at the moment :D

Has anyone else gone from one to the other? what were your experiences? Thank you in advance :D:D

Tea and malted milks on offer to all

Take the office job. Do it for 2 years then have a think about what you want to do next. You could always go into horsey admin with riding attached sort of job after a couple of years stint in an office.

Deffo take the office job more money and time to spend with your horse...then if you really don't like it, you can always go back to the horsey jobs!

I personally would go for the office job, my horse is my relaxation, my hobby.

I have a good, steady job with good pay, good holidays (which this week i have taken full advantage of :D) and have managed to to tonnes of extra stuff with my ned which makes doing the office job worthwhile.

I like having the two sides to my life but would always want them separate - this balance personally suits me the best BUT might not be for everyone.

Not much help i know :D

You said it your self, why would you want the yard job with more pay than before, when you still would have to work super hard, for a long time, and not have your own horsey time? You might find yourself becoming bitter about the whole equine affair.
I say it's a definite take the office job situation.

I had this dilema and chose the office job. I find the days flys by and am too busy to worry about being stuck indoors. Then spend all my free time playing with my ponies. Im lucky in the fact that they are only a 5 minute drive away so I go to see them at luchtime too.

Your all confirming what I thought :) I know its the more practical decision but im so worried about not being able to do the job as well its a little out of my area of expertise although I know I will be trained.

I think im just making excuses now haha :p

Office job as I've been in your position I found I lost a bit of interest in doing my own when having to do everyone' else's and not having time to ride mine or go to the shows as I'd have to work and being very tight with the cash I earnt.

Where as now... I have a great office job, getting lovely new horse and can do what I like.

It is your choice but you seriously need to think about what you want to do.

i used to work and teach on a yard and now have an office job. More money but i hate it......seeing the sun outside and being stuck in a stuffy office is driving me mad! come winter i may see different but u might not be so bad if u have flexi hours.

Horses!!!!

I had that choice and I chose office :( When I can afford it ill be leaving my job and doing horses full time, ive been in my job 12 months 8-4 so great hours, ok pay. But I am sooooo bored which makes me nackard when I get back from work. Ok in the winter it was nice to think I was in an office but Ive been miserable all year and the hours drag sooooo slowly when im in the office and speed by so quickly when im not so I just feel like I spend my whole life in the office. If I had the choice again I would take the horsey job. The question you have to ask is, do I need the extra money? Can I be miserable and bored for x number (hours your at work) per day?
So my advise is the horsey job. But good luck with your choice.

I would definately say horses I made the mistake of walking away from the yard I was at for more money and better hours and more time with my own horse.
But I realy regret it, any other work bores me and gives no sense of achievement!
But I've also decided to have a second child so, right after that enrol on a distance learning degree and get stuck in there again.
You have to think you've only 1 life, why waste it doing something you won't enjoy!

I am in the same position! Worked with horses my whole adult life. ( ridden since I was 4 ) Very overworked and underpaid and completely lost my enthusiasm for doing my own horses. Made the tough decision to quit horses completely, go to uni with the idea that a degree would get me a well paid job so I could have horses as a hobby. After 2 years of looking for work am still in a v poorly paid office job and would struggle to afford a horse again. Keep thinking I should go back to horses and be poor but happy, miss horses everyday :( What to do?!

It's even more money that I originally thought it was for the office job, I think that will be the clincher as it will mean I can keep my second horse and get my wedding paid off. Horsesforever I think your right, I should stick it out for a couple of years an if nothing else at least it can go on the cv. I will probably be bored stiff but at least I will have time for my own neds
