Hi All

I have an answer to an important question to find out and I didnt know who else to ask :( so I really appologise if this is posted in the wrong place please move etc if it is wrong, but I dont know who else to ask.

I have recently applied for 9 jobs. Out of those 9 there are 2 that I really would like. Now the problem is, one of the jobs is to start work on the 15th (this is an OK job that I couldnt turn down if it was offered to me but wouldnt be my favourite) and the job that I would really like (more hours, better money, better job all together) has interview dates on the 15th! SO what happens *if* I get the job that starts on the 15th but really I want the job that interviews on the 15th? What can I do? Can I accept the first job then refuse it if I get the other one? I dont like messing people around but would love this other job. Hope that makes sense and help!! :)

Screen your calls and play for time. It's a bit of a tricksy way of doing it, but I've done it a few times. I'm a consultant/contractor - I have to go with the best option for the business, plus I can run a number of jobs at once if necessary - so it might be a bit different for me.

You do have to give yourself a deadline though. Don't have job after job lined up.

Well added to this, my second favourite job has interviews on the 22nd, so if I dont get the job which interviews on the 15th then hopefully I would get the job interviewing on the 22nd. These are both better jobs. However, the job that starts on the 15th, I reckon I could get that one easily. So what can I say or do? They will obviously be interviewing beforehand and will want a firm decision from me so that I can say I start on the 15th?

MrsMozart can you deal with my calls etc please, you sound like a pro :D

Depends on your circumstances. If you really don't want the job that starts on the 15th then why go for it? Are you able to hold out for the other two possibles?

I charge a nominal fee for my services - usually hot choccy flavoured, with sprinkles I may add ;):p:D

Because I have learnt that jobs you think you will get, you sometimes dont and then there is no back up plan and then you are left unemployed and I have had enough of that! ;)

hot choccy and sprinkles, mmmmm - DONE!!

That is true missparis, I am a devil for doing that! I just like looking ahead :( but - must learn, must learn.......!

I think the only backup plan is to keep applying for jobs and having interviews. If you dont like a job, dont accept, but dont count your chickens before they have hatched with these other 2 jobs.

Thats what I mean, I may not get the 2 jobs that I really want, which is why if I get the first job I dont want to turn it down, but just dont know how to go about it. I dont like messing people around so if I accepted it, worked for a week then potentially get the other job then that would look bad.

Saying I am on holiday, is that lying? hmmmm

True that there's no point worrying about it until it's happened really - trying to foresee the outcome of job interviews is like betting on a horse race, because there's loads of factors.

Are all your interviews now confirmed? If you were to get a job before you've done all your interviews, I'd say take it but say you can't do the days of the interviews (obviously don't say why though). Obviously check the contract to see what period of notice you'd need to give to leave the job if you did get a better off - normally just a week in the first month of a job. And if you did get a better offer come up, I'm sure it wouldn't be the first time someone hasn't stuck around for long in the company - you'd be burning bridges but as long as you don't work in a really specialised field, it probably won't come back to bite you
