Best to use the connectors, otherwise the individual strands will not make contact and you will lessen the effectiveness of it. Over a length of tape, it is surprising how much current you can lose with breaks in the single strands. If you are in a windy area, keep your posts closer and if possible use the more expensive turbo tape, which has a strand of wire which goes up and down like a wave pattern through the tape and crosses the other strands thus increasing the connectivity.
I would concur "Spotty Botty", but would suggest "stainless steel split pins" available from Yacht chandlers, stick one down over the tape every post or every other, this re joins all the strands and keeps the current flowing down each one. Also with tape, ensure you have a very good earth pole, at least one metre, but even better two poles, or add an extra run of tape, parallel to the live one and connect it to the earth. This means when dobbin touches both tapes he gets a cracker! of a shock and hopefully will steer clear in future. This method is ideal in dry/stony soil areas, where the earth is bad!
