Hi all my first post but looking for advice or similar stories :-(

Took my mare hunting on boxing day, she was amazing but had a complete melt down in middle of the field i got off as was unlike her and decided to call it a day and walk her home until she calmed, after 5min i managed to get back on her and ride her about 15min after this point and her adrenaline had gone she went severely lame, i obviously got off and rang for emergency transport to take us home, on getting home noticed she had some blood on back leg under fetlock, was dark so couldnt fully investigate but cleaned leg up and bandaged her up and left her in stable.

Next morning shes practically on 3 legs no swelling but what looked like puss was extracted from the poltice, so cleaned up and re applied bandage, at this point we could she a 1.5inch cut under fetlock where feathers lie looked clean and pink and thought nothing of it, after a couple more days of cleaning and polticing her leg was swelling up to a point where i didnt know what to do so called vet out yesterday.

Vet arrived and said the joint fluid (cant spell term) has leaked and leaking and has soft tissue infection and possible tendon/ligament damage (cut) i feel dreadful but honestly didnt think it was as bad as it was like about 10 others at the yard :-( shes had bute/anti inflammatory/antibiotics etc injected and fed into her since yesterday am.

Vet has given a 50/50 chance of recovery, so so gutted... what peoples experience of this and daft question but how long does it take for the drugs to take effect???

Painkillers will take effect almost immediately but the infection will take as long as it takes to clear. Hopefully there is no tendon damage but frankly, given the background to the incident, the vet should have been there the next day. Can’t take any risks with injuries near joints and I was always taught you should never poultice an injury by a joint because of the risk of drawing the joint fluid – perhaps things have changed? Hope she recovers.
