A horse on our yard has just been diagnosed following a recurring lameness with a 'joint mouse' in the fetlock. From what I can gather second hand (owner is an HHO lurker - Hiya Sue - perhaps this post could persuade her to join in and tell us more

) that horse is to return to work but if becomes lame again, vets to be called and perhaps might need an Op. Anyone else heard of/have experience of this and what was the treatment and outcome???

aah! Thank you. It's making sense now I guess if the mouse doesn't move or cause more pain then there's no point in operating to remove it, but if it does..... Thanks Applecart - that factsheet was interesting

It's best removed as it can be terribly painful - those of you that have had cartilage pieces removed will know what the pain is like and how it can imobilise your joint.

The ones I've seen done by keyhole surgery have all been successful and th ehorse has had a good racing career.

Merlin has one at the front of his arthritic fetlock..... I refused to have it taken out as it is not in or near the joint (contrary to the name) and is encapsulated with flesh of some sort???

The risks involved with removal were too high for something that isnt causing a problem. (Locum vet wanted to take it out, usual vet agreed with me) YAY

Here are the further adventures of the joint mickey mouse!! The little rodent was spotted on the xrays and vets have decided it is to be evicted with immediate effect. So my lovely mare is off to Shelf Horse Horsepital tomorrow and is having her keyhole op on tuesday. Hopefully she will be out and home by saturday but until the vet knows exactly where it is situated, i.e how far into the joint they have to go to dig it out, will determine the recovery time. So I have washed her p.j's and will be packing her breakfasts tomorrow then its off we go. At least I now know that it wasnt the word "dressage" that was making her go intermittently lame!!

Will keep you all informed of her progress and hope that mickey mouse comes quietly!!
