After riding I get really sore/aching knees
frown.gif

Does anyone else get this? Any tips?

I wonder if I am maybe putting too much pressure in my stirrups without realising?

I used to get this when i was younger, try lengthening stirrup leathers one hole it worked for me and i think mine was because i was less experienced and used to ride short for security x

Thanks,
I will try putting stirrups down a hole tomorrow, I have tried it before but just wasnt comfortable.
Il try again though and just see if theres a difference

I used to get this when I was younger (40s) But when I was able to ride more (50s) my knees got better.
As a biologist/forensic osteologist I know that as the thigh muscle at the front of your leg gets stronger, (becomes more toned and shortens) , the natural space between the articular surfaces of the facets of the knee joint are pulled apart from each other, slightly widening the space.
If you have arthritic changes to these surfaces as a result of hard riding for years, you will get some relief as you get fitter.

I have found that where I have been unable to ride for the past 3 weeks 'cos of the weather my knees have got painful and I can hardly get out of a chair!!!! (ha ha - I am 54 next week).

Proves the point I think that If you don't use it, you lose it!

I'm 50 and have had painful joints whern riding for ages. I got Alison Jones who is a 3* Parelli instructir to have a look at me riding - she changed a few things abotu my position and told me to stop gripping with my calves, and ride a hole longer - that all really helped a huge amount

But it is individual - so get a ridden assessment from a real knowledgeable person

Also I was put on Omacor - a fish oil supplement by the GP - wow, that really helped a lot (it's for something else, but it massively helped joints)

Hi katie-southwest,
As an acupuncturist, i believe in Qi (ie energy) keeping flowing. Without going into more boring details about Chinese medicine (which could go on for years, as it's such a huge subject), i believe in this, along with the fact that good nutrition from natural sources, along with exercise, which i believe is absolutely vital, helps us all to achieve longevity + fitness.
I'd be a little careful about vit E + vit A, as they are fat-soluble, + may build up in the body + we're not quite sure what they do, long term. (Don't ask me!)
I think we all need to listen to Storm in Teacup. He's talked lot of sense, + thank you. I've listened. Keep walking, running, riding + swimming is message. With love to Storm in Teacup, who i've never met! BS x
