Joint Supplement following bilateral stifle arthroscopy

I've been having issues with hind lameness and after having my mare to the vets for ultrasounds and x-rays and a failed round of steroids, I decided to send my mare for a bilateral stifle arthroscopy. We had good news that there is no major damage to anything but a couple of areas that they've now tidied up which all together were causing the lameness. We're due to pick her up tomorrow and the surgeon said it would be beneficial to put her on a good joint supplement. He didn't recommend what they sold at the vets (very honestly!) and told me to look around at a few based on what they contain.

Can anyone recommend a good joint supplement or give a few ideas as to what to look for. I've read great things about the Science Supplements FlexAbility Pro but it seems extortionate at £80 a month on top of all the vet bills and physio etc she's going to need. I will pay it if it is really the best but if there are other options that are similar but cheaper, it's probably worth a go.

Thanks!

i did some not-very-deep digging into this, and the equine america glucosamine was what i went for. she had her stifles scanned after i started her on it and both had improved dramatically, but she’d also had stem cells injected into both so i dare say that played a bigger part!😂

interested to see what other people have found to be the best. i’m skeptical that any of them do much, but considering how much i’ve spent in vet bills another £20 for glucosamine doesn’t make much difference😂

Great that they've improved dramatically whichever it was ... I'm going to guess the stem cells :p We're yet to discuss treatment but stem cells is looking like an option!

Me too - I'm not convinced but with the vet recommending them I'll give it a go! Like you said an extra £20 on top of the rest is nothing 🤷‍♀️

Mine hasn’t got stifle problems but hocks. I dabbled with lots of different joint supplements and none of them worked for us. He ended up having them injected and he hasn’t needed supplementing since touch wood. I don’t rate any of them and I tried everything from the cheaper ones to the more expensive ones. My old vets really pushed that bozmerix and reading reviews some people had good results, it did nothing for mine.

considering the price for the stem cells, i hope it was that!!😂 shes 10 now, so even despite her current issues i figured she’s getting to the age that a little bit of extra support would be a good idea. my vet actually didn’t suggest it to me, i must make a mental note to ask him next time!
