My friend loans a horse from me who has been on a joint supplement for a year or two due to ringbone. Tbh the horse has never been completely sound with the supplement but the vet has said she can be lightly ridden and to carry on with it as bute doesn't seem to work on her. Anyway, my friend decided to stop the supplement about 4 months ago to see if there was any difference (although I think it was because she couldn't afford it any longer). The horse is now causing me some concern as when I let her out of the stable in the morning she is really slow and quite lame, although a bit better when brought in at night. I feel that a supplement of some sort would certainly be beneficial and she should at least buy her something but she thinks that cider vinegar and vegetable oil is sufficient and the supplement made no difference. How do I tell her that I want a joint supplement given when I know she has little money? She adores the horse and looks after her really well apart from this but I feel this is very important. No, an agreement was never signed and she knew she had a supplement when she took her on. Any thoughts on a good one that we may try? Sorry, and I hope this makes sense after a bottle of wine I had with my dinner..... it's taken me half an hour so far.... !!!!

I would really try and suggest a supplement!

Its not fair to put the horse under undue pain/stress because she cant afford a good supp!

Even Naf 5* would be better than nothing, glucosamine gold lable etc they are not THAT expensive?

If it was me, id offer half to be sure she was getting the sup she needs!

yes, my other friend suggested I could pay half, but the friend who has her on loan is saving to buy her from me so I feel that she needs to know she can afford to keep her before she does that as she can't rely on me then. I know I'm lucky to have somebody to take on such a horse but, at the same time it was on the understanding that she was given a supplement. Do you think cod liver oil is good enough as I was giving her a powder with MSM and glucosamine etc?

NO i dont think codliver oil is enough. My mare has ringbone- although shes not ridden and she is on an expensive supp because it helps her out and i think she needs it.
She needs a proper supp!
How would you feel if she bought her off you and the horse was lame/uncomfortable and your friend continued to ride her?

If the horse needs the extra help then your friend needs to realise that and do something about it.

It would kill me!

Well, tomorrow I'm going to approach the subject and have decided that if she can't or won't give her a good supplement then we shall just take her back and maybe try and find a really good home for her elsewhere.

NAF Superflex, this stuff is amazing. Made one of mine far more supple when he wasnt even stiff (I didnt think!) and also amazingly has seemingly cured his cold back! Will never take him off this stuff. My veterans are on it as well, and my athritic pony is cantering around her paddock!

i use cortaflex and codlivine also find bandaging legs at night when stabled makes a difference to my old girl is very stick in her rear hocks but you can always tell when she has / hasn;t had her bandages on, also the NEW maganatherapy boots help.

Cairo has corta-flx (from the US) and linseed. I have noticed a great improvement in his movement since he has been having linseed, so much so that this summer I am going to try him just on the linseed to see how he is.

People at Simple Systems told me when I commented on this, that several of their customers have found this and now just use linseed.

You can get it fairly cheaply from Simple Systems or Gold Label also do instant linseed. Also gives a great coat and good for the digestion.
