Vet wants Rosry (Gordon Setter x) to be weaned off Metacam injections and to save them and oral Metacam for the future. He proposed using a MSM/Glucosamine and Chrodontin supplement in the mean time. Cortaflex and arthri-Aid didn't work, so I'm looking at Synoquin (would have to see if they stock it). Any other ideas?

the most effective thing on my elderly collie is Vitapet R&A-tried various ones from the vet which didnt seem to help or he eventually refused to eat. Have been using it 2 months now and he is much improved, although the weather helps! I've not used green lipped mussels but they are supposed to be effective.

I use Flexi-joints from VetVits, it contains glucosamine and chondroitin. I don't know if its the best but you can order online at www.vetvits.co.uk so its convenient. A 120 pack is £6.95 and 240 is £11.90 for a medium sized dog they recommend two tablets a day.

Tried bioflow to no avail

Tahnks guys, will look at those and decide as synoquin is £62 for 120 tablets..

Have you tried Animal Health, Beeston for prices of Synoquin? At the mo they are doing 30 tab's for £11.40, buy 3 get another; might be worth a shot cos they post anywhere; they're also the cheapest about for the equine version. Their ad is in the worming section in h&h for their website.

try www.kineishealth.com they have a range of canine supplements all containing HA, little beefy chews that the dogs love and also very effective, they come from the states and are fairly new in this country but developed by vets so they know what they are doing!

Synoquin! all the way. Our boy (an Irish wolfhound) is on 4 sprinkle capsules a day for life. That's a relatively high dose but weight wise he is just on 13 stone. Synoquin have a web site with trial papers. I really do like the stuff and think it's beneficial but must be used over a long period of time. Our boy wa soperated on at 10 moths old for OCD of the shoulder and we have not seen any detrimental effects in that shoulder and he is now 4 years and hunts regularly and does between 3-5 hours exercise a day...little git!

Poor lamb! really suffering!lol!

Why is your vet taking your dog off the injections?

A good friend of mine has some kind of injections to her border collie x because he was really stiff (I think he is 9 or 10) and couldn't do long walks anymore because he would be really sore. Now he has these injections, I don't think they're metacam they are quite new, and he is like a different dog. He is totally free moving and very very happy! I can ask her more about them if you like...

Hi there,
there are a new range of products on the market called Riaflex. THey are therapy grade so super strength, formulated and produced by a qualified therapsit. They are in fact aimed at the equine market but it is exactly the same stuff for dogs. Really good value for money and will last for ages as the tub is bigger as for horses. If you type in riaflex-equine to a search engine it should come up. THere is loads of info and free advice from a qualified therapsit. Although it is written about horses it is exactly the same for dogs. Well worth checking out. It could save you a lot of money and provide a far higher dosage rate than most other named brands. My dog is on it. It's great.
As a rule of thumb your dog should be on about 1900mg glucosamine, 1900mg MSM, and 700mg of chondroitin daily. Pretty strong but Riaflex provides these doses. You can e mail the therapist direct from the website to ask advice.
Hope this helps. Good luck!

Soudns like Cartrophen...Rory's newest medication.

Basically the Metacam will damage his liver long term and he's onyl 7...so we're tryign to "save" it for later in his life.
