Our 10 year old mongrel (ridgeback x) is increasingly struggling with her rear hips and has had query arthritis in her front feet/lower legs before leading to short term anti-inflammatories being prescribed. Vet has suggested giving her a joint supplement before thinking about long term veterinary treatment. Does anyone have sucess with feeding a joint supplement and which do you use?
Thanks

I also use yumove for my bc , we compete at local agility shows and just like to boost his joints and help protect them, have also heard great things about Doggonepain , which is all natural and supposed to be as good as Rimadyl :)

I was told there was a recent study negating claims about glucosamine. If anyone can find it, please link it.

Cod liver oil is contraindicated for dogs as they can't excrete excess/absorb and it accumulates leading to excesses of vitamin a, apparently a bad thing.

Natural stuff eg green lipped mussel really helped my hd dog and raw bones eg chicken wings.

I started using the joint chews by pedigree, but then as my dog gets older he needs a bit more. So he has a human glucosamine tablet crushed in his food. I don't know if there is a study proving it's useless, but it has really worked for him. He doesn't look stiff at all, and before he started on the crews he was very stiff. He's 12 and a half so I'd expect some stiffness :D

Thanks for your suggestions. We will start her on something and see how she gets on. How long do you think I should trial for before expecting to see an improvement? I am not known for my patience and don't want to swap, thinking something is not working, if I have not waited long enough for it to make a difference.

Joint supplements can take several months to work (if at all!) but when I started mine on turmeric I noticed a big improvement within days.

To be honest I'm not sure if the joint supplement is doing anything but my thinking is that as she's an old lady and doing well why change anything now. I am however now re-thinking the cod liver oil although my vet has approved it. If she was younger I'd just be giving her the turmeric and see how she got on with that.

Thanks dalidaydream, I have to say that I am sceptical about joint supplements but definitely don't want to give drugs unless I have to. Where do you get your turmeric from? is it different from cooking turmeric or just the same but in a pellet?
