My Spook's 16 now and i want to try and prevent the joints stiffning up, and arthritus etc etc. Just generally all the stuff that old horses/ponies get.

Is there any supplements that will prevent the arthritus and stiff joints coming through. But will also keep his coat in good condition?

I know i can help his coat keep in good condition by myself, but ive just bought him two weeks ago and his coat isnt in the best condition.

Thanks, Claire

My old lad is 30 in January and I feed him Codlivine with joint supplement. He still hacks out a couple of times a week and is doing OK although a little stiff in the morning. My dressage horse is a strapping 13 year old and he gets Cortaflex. The Codlivine is good for coats and general condidtion also it is much cheaper than the Cortaflex.

Hiya I fed mine Vet Vits flexijoint, It's from a compnay called healthspan, based in Jersey. Good product and no VAT and free p&p, woohoo! My YO is a vet and she recommended it to me

Friend at my place had arthritic cob 17hh and thats a lot for joints to take, he's on Newmarket supplement, although it is expensive it has meant he can hunt and dressage and hack. Only prob is that it doesnt really do anything for condition of coat. Mattilda makes good suggestions tho that ive heard good results from.

I have had wonderful result for Kias arthritus with sharks cartilage. if you look up seapet and sharks cartilage.

I had to mix molsses/treacle or mint oil for Kia to eat it but he was tracking up and moving better about 2 weeks after starting it. He has arthritus in his hock.

NAF superflex is also fantastic been looking into that as you have to order the sharks cartilage from the US and DEFRA can take it for testing befre giving you it back if it is audited coming into the country.

I'm using Suppleaze Gold for my two horses and it has made an amazing difference for the more arthritic one, plus it's one of the more reasonably priced joint supplements on the market:

For his coat, you could invest in a good breathable rug like a Fal: they have a silky lining that buffs the coat up. My horse had been living out all summer and was a bit motheaten with hair standing up on end like a bear, but as soon as the rug went on she looked like burnished mahogany!

A good supplement for the skin and coat is Dodson & Horrell Itch-Free.

NAF Superflex is fantastic stuff. I have 2 veterans on it and it somehow cured my coldbacked horse - who knows how. The veterans I swear have become more mobile on it and they all eat it including 2 of them who are very picky.

It doesnt help with the coat but just add some soya oil for that, which can be bought cheaply from your local feed store usually (I take my own bottles and they just fill up, I think 5 litres is about £3.50ish).

Try cod liver oil. We have an ex riding school pony who was on bute when he first came. We cut out the bute and gave him a glug of cod liver oil in his tea and he looks and feels fab, to the point where he canters around the field. It costs us £1.50 a litre so a lot cheaper than supplements. You really wouldnt believe it would make such a difference.

Super codlivine.

Cod liver oil for coat shine and joints with vits and mins for health and skin.

To help with the cartilage itself Cortaflex or Synequin.

Have had good results with Vet Vits and Suppleaze gold (both mentioned above). Prefer the Suppleaze Gold tho as has H.Acid in it which is a bonus for the price.

I Arthriaid HA from Horse Health, or Mobifor. Having done all the comparisons these came out on top for the most glucosamine and condroiten per serving. I also swear by Devil's claw.

My welsh D that actually had cartilage damage in the stifle is sound on Cosequin - fab stuff, it seems expensive but once you have got past the loading dose it works out cheaper than a lot of the other joint supplements, I reckon on maintenece that a tub will last 8 months, for coat NAF Oilovite powder.
