The vet thinks that my horse has the start of arthritis in his coffin joints so I would like to start putting him on a joint supplement but there is that much information and varying opinions I don't know where to start! I've searched previous threads but I'm still confused on what's best.

I was thinking maybe this one...

Or even trying turmeric.

Any recommendations of supplements that people have noticed a positive difference with their horse?

Thanks

Hi!

I swear by James Hart Devils Claw Flex for my (now previously) stiff horse.

It's a high tincture, so works out for me more cost effective than other cheaper solutions.

Micronised linseed is the only thing that helped my old mare who had very bad arthritis in one pastern, I tried most of the "proper" joint supplements with no difference. My current oldish (rescue so exact age unknown) pony showed a marked improvement in suppleness and energy when I tried him on turmeric this winter, so would certainly give it a try if I had anything that with joint problems or stiffness.

Talk to Alex at Hack Up Bespoke. When my 21 year old was diagnosed with bilateral hock arthritis I tried every joint supplement on the market before getting a bespoke joint/AI supplement from Hack Up. Kept him totally sound and off bute until he was pts due to cancer. I would highly recommend it and it certainly won't break the bank (approx £16 a month).

I have tried both suppleaze gold and turmeric (can't give it to him now as not suitable for horses on prascend) and numerous other joint supplements even a bespoke supplement. I have to highly recommend the Aviform Suppleaze Gold also very reasonably priced if you buy direct from them.

My mare was diagnosed with arthritis in the coffin joint this time last year. She's now on turmeric, linseed and black pepper and a joint supplement called PremierFlex HA from Equine Answers and is doing well.

The Hack Up joint supplement has made a positive difference I my youngster who has many hoot problems. She gets a lot of micronised linseed daily too.

Pops is fed micronised linseed year round because it's so good for all joints and skin and coat (and he has navicular syndrome), but I also feed him Maxaflex (by Maxavita) - it contains green lipped mussel powder which apparently has natural joint supporting properties but has added glucosamine, MSM and hyaluronic acid. Works for Kal - can't say, hand on heart, that I believe it would work for every horse.

I don't feed turmeric because we believe he has ulcers (has never been scoped but is girthy, naturally a stressy horse so we feed him as though he has them - high fibre/high oil, low starch/low sugar diet).

P

P.S. Pops also gets two squirts of linseed oil in each feed in the summer . . . and Copra meal in the winter - on the basis that oil (the right kind of oil) is a good, digestible source of energy (without being heating) and is very good for joints.
