My friend and I had a day out today and went to ford for lunch. The pub there is directly opposite jonjo o'neils gallops. Well we arrived at the right time and got to see the racehorses hacking down the gallops and then galloping back up :D what a beautiful sight!

Does anyone know if they have open days at jackdaws castle as would love to have a look round yard xx

What a double treat you had!
Think the Open Day might be Easter time, but probably wrong!
What I am envious is that you had lunch at the Plough!!!!
(Have you tried the Black Horse at Naunton, used to be a favourite when I was riding round the villages)!

I think the open day might be for press only, I might be wrong though. Hope so as I'd like to go too!

There is a public footpath that goes right up alongside the gallops (you are walking about a metre away from them!) and you can walk up and watch the horses gallop past you just a couple of feet away. It's amazing, although quite a walk up the hill! Worth it though - when you get to the top you can also see them all grazing in their paddocks, it's really lovely.

Lucky you, love the Plough (their cheesy chips are the best!!). You should try and get up there for Cheltenham - they have a marquee covering the garden with a bookie and big tvs. Brilliant atmosphere! Don't think Jonjo has open days, like the poster above mentioned - your best bet is the footpath to watch them at work. Another good racing pub is the Hollow Bottom at Guiting Power - Nigel Twiston-Davis is your local trainer there.

Yes the food was quite a treat too!! Yum yum but can now hardly move :D we did go up the footpath a short way but my friend can't walk very far as waiting for a possible heart transplant and gets very breathless so we couldn't go far. We just feel so lucky to of arrived at just the right time!

Do you know how often they have horses out on the gallops as would love to go over again. I hope they do public open days as it would make my friends day to go xx

Not sure what time they go up the gallops but my friend rides for him so could find out, then you could get there for when they are going :)

I'd really appreciate that, thank you. My friend is having such a hard time at the moment that it's nice to do fun things for her xx

If she enjoyed that she may also enjoy following the hunt one day, we managed to catch up with the hunt after a long journey and was very good fun.
I just sent her a text waiting for reply now :)

Yes she's followed the hunt and really enjoyed it. She also used to follow the beagles which is how she knows ford and the plough xx

The yard was on Central Midlands news just, talking about Grand national entries.

I wonder if that's what they where filming for then as they had a camera crew in the back of jonjo's 4x4. Did it show horses going up the gallops? If so we where there watching :D

Saw the yard, as the trainer was talking, the 3 National horses were in a beautiful indoor school.Didnt notice the gallops today, but surely will be on a future report. Good luck with your mission.

Sounds fantastic :D Point number 1 - pm JDchaser on here as they'll know quite a bit about the yard, gallop timings etc.

Point number 2 - why not contact Jonjo O'Neill himself (or his PA) and explain your friend's situation. You never know what might happen if you ask...
