Little Boo is just 7 months old. Is she too young to be in season?

Her little foofoo is swollen and pink but no sign of blood. She is drinking and weeing normally.

I know my border collie was about 9 months when she had her first season but being so hairy we didn't notice till she was bleeding.
 
Millie my JRT came into season at 7 months too, perfectly normal, the season goes through quite a few different phases over a period of weeks and is really obvious with the JRT's,.
 
Ok. Thanks. So should we expect the bleeding to start soon? She has been swollen for about a week now.

Like I said, we didn't notice our collie swelling before she came into season as she is mega hairy, it was only when she started bleeding we knew.

Will Boo attract dogs now even though she is not bleeding. Should she be kept on the lead untill she has started and finished bleeding?
 
yup, sounds about right.

Also, my dog seems to have her seasons the same time as i come on my period... do you think that could work in the same way that women spending lots of time can syncronise cycles???
 
First seasons are often not typical, so keep a careful eye on her, just because there is no blood does not mean she will not be attractive to dogs. In a normal season they are usually at their height (i.e. ready for mating) when the bleeding has tailed off or gone a lot lighter, sorry if tmi, so don't relax when the bleeding stops, keep a close eye for at least another week or so.
 
^^^ the preffered day for mating is around day 10 till 14 of a season, so do be careful when she is around other dogs like MM said.

We have no intention of breeding from her so will get her spayed. Now my OH believes they should have 2 seasons (don't know why, think his dad always said that) so my other dog was not nuetured untill she had 2 seasons.

I think this might be a load of rubbish and would want Boo done as soon as possible.

So what age, or how long after her first season is the best time for her to be nutured?
 
When does day 1 start?
When she starts swelling or when she starts bleeding? No signs of blood yet just a humungus foof!

our terrier prances past the dogs in the kennels when shes in, drives them crazy little hussy she is.

Gable you find with doggy people everyone has their own little laws and rules. like every bitch should have a litter.
 
they suggest halfway between the seasons, so when she's finished her season, a 2 and a half months later would be a good time to get her 'done' - that was the plan with Millie (all gone t*ts up now my horse needs a bit of extra care - cant cope with two sick pets when one of them isnt a critical op) so she's going to be done after her 2nd season. Never heard of waiting on purpose until then though...
 
Yeah, have heard the one about every bitch should have a litter.

Far too many unwanted pups around I think to even risk leaving her unutered.
Our garden is very safe, but being a JRT she does have a habbit of digging! Don't want her to dig her way to the spaniel next door!
 
Especially with JRTs they're everywhere at the moment (or it just seems that way) one Millie (my JRT) is more than enough for the world. there's no way i could cope with her having a litter - they'd drive me mad!

2.5 months is fine IF the dog cycles every 5-6 months. However, not all dogs read the textbooks which is why it is quite a good idea to wait until the dog has had two season (at least) so you know the duration of their lapsed time between cycles and can therefore ACCURATELY judge the half-way/OPTIMUM/safest time for spaying.

Ah. That might be why my OH said 2 seasons
 
All girls are different, they say small dogs usually come in season earlier, 6-7 months, I've heard some as early as 5 months. I have 3 Border Collie girls, the oldest had her 1st season at 15 months, then the next 6 months later, then 8 months, then 10 months, then 8 months, she was speyed at 4 years old. The next 1 had her 1st season at 7 months old, then cycled regularly every 5.5 months until the season I wanted to breed her when she was a month late, then I have her just year old daughter, she's just come into her 1st season last week.

Day 1 of a season is when te bleeding starts, but again all are different and some hardly bleed and keep themselves really clean like my 5 year old and others bleed lots and don't clean themselves like her daughter.
