I have a 4 yr old male JRT (castrated) and an 8 month old male JRT (not castrated). The younger dog will cock his leg up against anything that isn't at that moment moving. I understand that he is only marking his 'patch' but it is now becoming beyond a joke. Would having him castrated stop him from doing it? Any suggestions welcome.

I've only owned bitches, but I used to occasionally walk a dog that often wanted to pee first standing in one direction, turn around and pee again at the same spot and then turn around a second time (so his head was pointing the same direction as when he peed the first time) and pee a third time. Even when he didn't pee three times at the same spot, he still wanted to pee at something/anything with 5 to 10 meters interval. I'm afraid I soon taught him that he was only allowed to do that a few times per walk when he was with me, the other times I simply hauled off with him. I didn't need to do that many times until he realised that I allowed him to stop and sniff but that he was not allowed to pee that often with me.

If he does it indoors, I've heard that a squirt from one of those spray bottles that you can have for pot plants, can be helpful to make them realise there is a right and a wrong place for everything. Set it so it is only one "jet", await the right moment and aim up under the belly.

I would presume that castrating would make him less likely to want to inform the world about his territory, but that is just my presumption.

I have a miniature JR that is exactly the same. He does it on the pillows though and not all the time. He drives me mad. Its not a lot just a few drops but it STINKS! I didnt really want to castrate him in case that didnt help and I may use him to breed with. Will try the spray trick lol although he seems to hide and wait for me to leave the room. I now hide all the pillows but sometimes I forget. He is one of my 'babies' so cant ban him from the bed lol

Mine would do this everywhere if I let him but I now say "NO!" firmly now and either whop him lightly with my hand or just keep dragging him on his lead.
It eventually sinks in.

Also I smack him if he goes to poo in public places or mown lawns. He can control his bowel movements to a matter of strategic moments so I know he can choose when and where to do a poo.
It has worked, he only poos on rough ground now.. It takes a few months and is advanced training for the adult dog .....Ha Ha!!!!
