Judge a book by its cover so to speak!

I have recently had a conversation with a knowledgeable horse person about breeds and one thing that came out of it was that I don't assume what a horse will behave like in relation to its breed or looks, I just take every horse as an individual. Perhaps I just don't know enough about breeds or do others not judge a horse by its cover.

I agree that every horse is an individual, but breeding will give strong tendencies. It's a very useful start if you are looking for a particular personality.

I am a more mature :wink3: rider and have got myself a youngster to back and bring on. Because I do not bounce very well any more, I did not buy a thoroughbred or a warmblood because they tend to be a tad more difficult. I might have ended up with an angel, but didn't fancy my chances.

Well the saying 'Don't judge a book by it's cover' is I think a good one. Generalities about a breed or type are just that & may not apply at all to the horse in front of you.

Interesting. I not only take the specific breeds into account but particular bloodlines are paramount to me. I have many horses with the same/similar bloodlines and yes there are most definitely traits which are heritable, some desirable, some not so. I am a breeder however so I do spend my life dealing with horses of certain lines and seeing similar tendencies coming out in related horses.
