Right, for all of you people that worry your horse is cold because its ears are cold. Are you feeling the base of the ears or the floppy bits? ;)

Honestly... Its the base of the ears you go by not the whole ear! Otherwise you would be piling rugs on and end up none the wiser. Just incase anyone was fluffily stroking their beasts lugs and didnt realise!

And lets face it, sticking your hand under the rug is a much better indication??

Ehmm .... Further along in my posts I did make it known that I do check the base (and sometimes put my thumb in there and have a good feel if he's feeling co-operative!) xx

and breathhhhhhhhhhhheeee :)

i agree though, but either way when horsey has been playing out - the ears are not a good indicator at all.

I think the best way to check a horses temperature is to get a psychic in and with the help of carrot stick.. just ask the horse.

I can offer this service using my special, patented long range carrot aerial-sticks. Just set up a direct debit into my account (I can only sense your horse's temperature if you've sent me something of yours - and money is easiest to transfer, right?) and I will pm you whether your horsey is feeling hot, cold or just right morning, noon and night :D

I'd agree up to a point....

It's all about knowing your horse and what's right for their particular circumstances. I have one at the moment who is a chilly mortal - if her ears are warm from base to tip at night stables (about 10pm) then she is fine - if the top of her ears are starting to get cold then she is likely to get cold overnight unless the weather is going to warm up during that time. None of our others have been like this. We always check 'armpits' too.

Oh sorry SB not aimed at you in particular and I did see that, Ive just heard it a lot of late and it gets my goat ... mmaaaaaaa (goat noise)

And Catkin.. REALLY??? You should really think about sending money to JFTD she may be able to give you a more accurate reading and alert the cold police no matter what time of day :D

I will admit, I am a crap judge of what rugs to put on but ive never frozen or melted one to death ;)

Oh sure, you've not killed one yet, but just think how much your horses must hate you for not caring enough to make sure they are always perfectly toasty... They must see you coming and think "god what is she going to put on us this time  last night I had to dance a jig in my stable just to stop myself freezing to death". Just think how much better your "bond" would be if they didn't hate you like that?

I'll pm you my account details :)

I will do it for half of whatever JustFindingTheDecorations charges lol :D

don't trust money grabbing charlatans like this - this poster is clearly only interested in the money and will not have your horse's best interests at heart  I bet she doesn't even listen to what they're saying!

I wouldn't trust that poster either. Clearly the most expensive carrot stick waving psychic will be the most effective. I will forward funds right away if you could also stop my laminitic pony from liking grass so that I can turn her out in the lush fields with the others, have my 3 yr old unbroken horse jumping 1 metre in a week - I believe join-up will fix both matters.

Excellent, I will pm you my details. The laminitic is easy, just turn it out on your local astroturf pitch. That way you can save all the lush grass for your 3 year old who will need lots of energy to jump big fences.

Join up will get you nowhere. I can educate you in a much better technique - "Stuck-together" - which guarentees that not only will your horse follow you wherever you go, it will never let you fall off - even if you jump the fences bareback. Comes with own adhesive "massage-bonding oil" included in price. Very reasonable for extraordinary results.

i use "the bite test"

If i take the rug off and get bitten, shes cold.

If i try to put another rug on and get bitten - shes fine.

leave rug as is....feel ears...all good :) (base of ears that is... :D )

You will be in direct competition with PapaFrita's Huggly Horsemanship though, and they have a fantastic reputation :D

Hardly - huggly horsemanship is an entirely logical complement to adhesive horsemanship - the former ensures that there is much wuvs between you and ponykins before you mount up and ensure the continuation of your "close" relationship by the latter ;) :D
