Good jumping lesson today although my horse rushes to the fence, breaking out into canter and jumps straight over and then trots back round. I managed to keep a constant steady trot until the corner where he broke off to canter. I also tried hald halts but he just wouldn't respond. Any advice on how to make sure the horse doesn't rush off therefore bouncing me about as i am not prepared for it so can't steady myself until he has cantered a stride or two.

Are you troting him into the fence and then asking for canter a few strides out? Personaly I wouldn't be trotting, I would concentrate on getting a nice even canter use canter poles in front of the jump.

I have the opposite problem, we go slow into the fence then can't stop after... Would suggest you try cantering over poles to create a good rhythm and then raise one of the poles into a nice small jump and see how he responds.

Good Luck

mine just takes hold towards the jump and i was told to canter 20m circles in front of the fence until he settled and then just pop over, it worked for me.

We were asked to trot to the jump (was small anyway) and then after the first jump, the horse would canter to the next one, but i just have a hard time sometimes keeping the horse going steady rather than rushing round to jumps.
