I have a 16hh ID who is a really safe placid ride when i hack alone or school but when he jumps he becomes posessed lol

He loves to jump and showjumping i can ride him in his snaffle but he is strong but cause its in a ring he is managable.
I want to do more cross country with him but i cant find a bit that gives me control but he can jump well in too. I have tried a cheltenham gag and a french link (which he seems to like) sliding gag but the moment i put contact on the reins, he resists and throws his head straight up, so as i approach a jump and try to steady, his head is in the air and he goes through them as he is is hollow and doesnt lift!

Arrggghhh any ideas?? I have tried the pelhams but he hates the curb too!

Have you tried him in a continental gag? Putting the reins on the second ring, or getting a coupling, so you can have the leverage of the 3rd ring might help. It should stop him throwing his head in the air.

Maybe try a waterford? Encourages them not to hold the bit as its so moveable.
Or even a NS Universal which just gives that little bit more than a snaffle without being too much. Another option is a kineton noseband which will give pressure on the nose which encourages a more forward horse to come back into the hand and may help with the head in the air issue. How this helps :)
