My boy goes well in a normal sweet iron snaffle.

However when we jump, he gets oh so excited and we have no brakes at all! He is normally very good when schooling and slows through the seat.

What bit do you use for jumping?

Yes - to a dutch gag on 2nd ring. He's usually in an eggbutt snaffle but don't have many brakes in that going towards a fence!

Nope, we stay the same for everything! Snaffles all the way!!

I sometimes use a bit which is identical in the mouthpiece to the one I used for flatwork but has cheeks. So its a german silver lozenge full cheek snaffle.

Occasionally use a martingale when jumping too.

Ted jumps, flats in french link loose ring snaffle.
only diff i have for jumping ted is a flash.. cause he locks his jaw and grabs the bit for 2 strides after every fence.

i used to ride in a gag all the time for everything-then i got brave and rode in a snaffle and changed to gag for jumping. now even braver i have recently been jumping in a snaffle too!!!!!!!!!!! i have a little trouble stopping but found he jumps better as he doesnt have anything to fight against! i do sometimes put a martingale on though! i also put the gag in when i go hunting or xc for obvious reasons.lol i have such a stupidly large bit collection, i think i need to offload it all-come to think of it-is there a swap shop for horsey things online, maybe i could swap them all!!!! :-)
sorry to change topic there!

When I first got Sam he came in a plain snaffle and he was fine out hacking and for general school work - but when I started jumping him he turned into a tank and dragged me to any jump he fancied having a go at - it was awful, I had no brakes and no steering and came off a few times! I stopped jumping him as I had no control and we concentrated on his flat work over the winter. We seem to have ironed out a few issues and he jumps beautifully in his snaffle now - we just got placed 3rd in the Intermediate class at a local SJ comp this evening and he is a different horse now

For XC we change to a Kimblewick as he is just too strong and if I tried that in a snaffle I would end up in the next town

French link for schooling, french link gag on the middle ring for hacking or it feels like I'm riding in a headcollar ie no brakes or steering. Bizarrely, gag on TOP ring for jumping cos he gets v upset on middle ring. ???

Had his teeth done today by a very good EDT so we shall see what happens.

I ride Jenny in a myler kimblewick the majority of the time - including jumping and only change into her myler comfort snaffle to do a dressage test.

I change bit for XC - I use a kimberwick. For flatwork and SJ I used a barrel mouth baucher. Tend to add a martingale for SJ mainly to give me something to hang onto (!).

That might all be changing soon though as I'm having some flatwork issues...

Yes. There is no hope of me jumping in a snaffle, it scares us both! I flat in a KK snaffle, hack and jump in a pelham. Used to hack and jump in a waterford dutch gag but needed a change of bit as he wasn't respecting that any more.

IMO there is nothing worse than seeing a horse having its mouth hauled at in a snaffle because the rider has no brakes when a simple change of bit would allow them to ride with light hands.
