I have an eight year old 15.3hh ex hurdler who is just coming back from an injury. Hes now cantering and due to start jumping soon. Earlier this year i did abit of jumping with him and took him to a few pc showjumping rallies. He is very talented, never stops and very rarely touchs a pole. The problem is he often still jumps things like they are hurdles! Which is very uncomfortable! And i guess as the jumps go higher he won't be able to get away with it like he does now over smaller jumps. I have an instructor but due to both him and me being very busy i only have lessons occasionally.

I've only taken up jumping since i got this guy, as i only do dressage with my pony. So I was wondering if you could offer me some advice please and some exercises to use for him? Along with the distance between poles etc.

Thank you!

No real idea, but my suggestion would be google lots of pole exercises and do LOADS of pole work. Someone on here will have better suggestions but I wouldnt increase the height until he'll go normal on lower ones. xxxxx

P.S. my other half says 4 strides for a show jump stride, 5 for an "eventing" stride.

Here's some ideas:
- Three trot poles then a bounce stride to a cross pole is a good one to encourage your horse to approach steadily. You can then add another cross pole one or two canter strides after the first.

- Bounce jumps will encourage him to sit back on his hocks and bascule more over his fences

- A placing pole in front of a jump to help him to judge the take off.

Hope this helps. :)
