and have come to the conclusion that i stand up rather than folding.

can anyone give me exercises to help my postion?

my position wasnt helped by not having any brakes going into the jumps but that will be sorted for next time i go out

Are your stirrups short enough for a start? Too long stirrups don't help you get the correct position when jumping.

Practise jumping (start with trotting poles) without any stirrups. Sounds terrifying but its an old Pony Club trick (jumping lanes bareback and no reins!!) and it really does work!!

OK, think *belly button to the pommel* and follow the horses mouth with your hand, look up and beyond the jump and stay straight through your back.
Apart from that - practice and confidence, try positive forward rhythm and don't pull dead weight against the horse if strong - little checks will be more successful AND easier on your position. Stirrups could be shorter, but don't go many holes at once.
Hope that a) makes sense and b) helps

One exercise i used to teach was to practice on flat ground first. Firstly make your light seat postion whilst your horse is stationary by holding it all in your legs and knees also with your hands froward then ask your horse to walk on and work your postion through the gaits then Id lay out a few flat poles like a course around the school and every time you go over one like you would a jump pick up your postion and each time you do this make the poles a little higher untill your flying over jumps a youll be fine

Some times when your workin on your issues and not the horses taking the fences out of the way makes you concentrate more on you and what your doing then whether or not your horse in on the right leg, is going to take of correctly, ect ect.

Hope this helps, keep us posted

Practise jumping position on the flat - Make sure your stirrups are up at least two holes from your flat length.

Fold from your hips, (making sure that you keep your back straight) until your shoulders form a vertical line with your knees and toes - in jumping position your toes should be just visable from above. Look up. Bum goes back a little in the saddle.

Work in this position on the flat to help strengthen the muscles and your back. Work over trotting poles. The progress to jumping. Approach the fence in jumping position and sit still! Allow the horse to jump under you, just moving your hands forward either side of the horses neck just below the line of the mane.

As someone else has said - jumping without stirrups is a great way to learn to fold as you cannot stand.

ditto the no stirrups comments, we used to be made to jump over small jumps with no stirrups and no reins (arms out to the side like an aeroplane). i cursed it at the time, but it was genuinely very useful. and gave me good balance (which i have since lost...)
