This is just out of curiosity! I know neither is designed as a jumping horse and I would never buy one as a jumping horse but can they jump? I know technically anything will jump but with reguards to their conformation and build, does jumping do them any harm? Anyone got either of the breeds and sj them? I'm just taking local level like 3ft jumps? Photos?

This is my friend's Friesian jumping in the summer having never jumped before - he loved it!

isn't there a grey andalusian x eventing at 3* level?

i think most horses will turn their hoof to almost anything up to a certain level, and friesans have taken pretty well to dressage having been bred for pulling a plough!

Yeah, if your taking into account Iberians - minkymoo pointed out the Whitakers Luso. There was also a pure bred who went round Badminton this year. So yes, they can jump and I think they can be bred for it - its just they're mainly used for dressage obviously.

I've got a Luso x TB who's jumping 1.20's and BE Novice easily. He's the grey in my siggy. I would definately buy another.

i have a pure breed lipizzaner... can he jump?? 4 foot is nothing to him, he is bold as well... a normal filler lying around he will spook at put it up as a jump, and he takes you to it, he has also competed ode, and been schooled around proper x country jumps. he jumps is so powerful its quite scary!

Um - no offence, but I wouldn't use that photo as a great example of Friesians' jumping ability! He looks like a really sweet horse, but he is barely clearing that very tiny crosspole, and even for a beginner he's making a very clumsy job of it! Please don't take offence: I'm sure the photo doesn't do him (or other Friesians) justice!

I used to jump my Friesian . Only upto about 2'6'' though. He really wasnt built for it! There are ones out there doing affiliated abroad (if you google) but never seen one over here. I have heard of a few that hunt well.

Ditto!

Its a better picture than anyone else has come up with for friesians jumping! If you think it is bad( which I don't, for a first time jumping for a non-jumping breed he looks like he was having a great time and clearing it) then maybe that says something about their jumping abilities..

Just to clarify - He is indeed jumping clumsily, but that was one of his first jumps in his life (aged 12!). By the end of the day he was clearing the tiger-trap next to it (2ft6+) with ease and loving it!

The breed aren't bred for jumping but he certainly seems to be enjoying himself. I put it up with the intention of highlighting the fact that they can jump up to 3ft happily, but they are not a 'jumping' breed so they will have limitations.

In fact his owner believed he couldn't jump at all so we were all amazed as she shot off around the mini course and came back with a grin from ear to ear!

My friend has an Andalusian who she competes BD, currently elementary, but shes even thinking of affiliating him to BSJA....he has the most amazing jump, he won't touch a pole!

Another friend has a Freisan stallion and he jumps like a stag! He jumped out of his stable and into an arena to get to a mare one day!

And for a beginner are you actually expecting the horse to be jumping a larger height, to get stridings right and to be making a cleaner shape of the fence?

I hope when you do post pictures that people are less judgemental than you are, especiall when the poster never asked for critique

Well Apollo is half fresian, and this year (as a foal) he jumped out of the field a few times, not to mention the fun he has jumping over wheelbarrows when you're poo picking! I guess it depends but I'd imagine most horses could clear 3ft whatever their breed?

Given that you don't know the horse or the situation I can sort of let you off that harsh comment. To clarify - Harm (the horse in question) had never jumped before and his rider is very much of the type to keep all four feet firmly on the ground. Yes, it's not a shot that the Friesian Horse Society would stick on their brochure to advertise the vesatility of the breed but OrangeEmpire was merely trying to aid the OP in her question of whether Friesians could jump (and in the pic he IS jumping, albeit not basculing or anything spectacular but still, he's clearing what was for him, a step out of the ordinary). Harm might not have much ability in the jumping stakes but once he took off across our top field (rider on board!) and cleared the 3'6" fence into the next paddockl! Granted it was a one off!

From what I know of Friesians in general they much prefer to do the flat work and don't have the ability to jump top level stuff. They were bred to be driven ultimately, and given their general conformation etc I can't see them becoming high level show jumpers anytime soon!

Lady in our RC has an Andalusian stallion who she jumps, and my GOD can he jump! Her YO has been out BSJA with him and he's been round a couple of intros now...his main thing is dressage, but he is a true allrounder, I've only seen him go up to about 3'6 but he makes that look easy!!
Agree with someone above, sorry can't remember who, who said most horses should go up to 3'0 regardless of breed, my 15hh arab who isn't exceptionally talented or anything can jump 90cm from a walk.....think most of them can do a lot more than we give them credit for!!
