what would you recommend doing if when you pull your horse back on jumps she refuses but if you kick her on she rushes at it and takes out a stride and over jumps?

i’ve just been struggling a lot and not sure what to do!

I think people are suggesting a riding instructor as the horse and rider need to be able to canter in balance without kicking on or holding back, as you describe them. A good instructor will be able to help you ride more from the core and keep in balance, then the jumping will come more easily.

do you have any suggestions of things i could try when im riding her?

Yes. You need to learn to make her stride bouncy and adjustable and learn to judge your fences so you know when she's on the right stride. For that, you will need an instructor, but one great exercise is to put two poles on the ground about 30 metres apart, and then ride it counting the strides and seeing what difference you can make in the number of strides she is doing.

In the mean time while you sort out an instructor, practice on the flat having more than one speed within paces. So faster & slower trots & canters so she understands that a check doesn't mean stop. Go along the long side in fast canter then see how bouncy & slow a canter you can get on the short side without her going out of canter. Do get help though - there's a lot to learn for jumping besides staying on & getting over it! Judging strides and distances and angles and speeds needs a good instructor & is very much worth it , you will enjoy it - it's fun and interesting.

thank you so much for the help!

do some proper dressage and get her canter balanced, beginning collection so you can shorten her stride without pulling on her mouth, then lengthen it without losiing balance, when you can adjust her stride length by just using your seat you will not need to interrupt her before a jump and put her off.

oh and ride around the corners bent in the direction you are going will be a great help
