How often do you/should you jump your horses? I've always been taught that you should only practise jumping once a week, for a session up to an hour. (jumping little logs ect out on hacks don't count) Other people only jump at competitions, and others jump nearly every day! I don't think jumping too often is very fair on the horse, but some do really enjoy it...

What do you think?

totally depends on the horse, but on an established horse that doesn't need the practise, i'd say once a week early-to-mid-week, with a quick sharpen-up 2 days before the competition at the weekend, would be my ideal.
it is all wear and tear and risk of injury, so i wouldn't do more unless the horse really needed it.

As a child our golden rule at home was for every day you jump you need to do 3 days of flatwork schooling or 2 days of schooling and 1 day hacking to create a well schooled, well rounded and happy fit horse. I stuck to it religiously untill i stopped doing much jumping..........

I tend not to jump at home unless I need to, or for lessons. I know horses that jump every time they are ridden, they aren't fussed on it.

Our experienced eventers (novice upwards) would get a tune up jump 2 days before a comp and that would be it. The not so experienced get a jump early week then the a tune up jump before a comp. If they aren't competing they just get a jump some time in the week.
Our old boys though do jumping lessons and can jump up to 4 times a week. They don't seem to mine though, both are 20 and still going strong.

My guys get jumped as and when I can, about once every 2 months.

Really depends on the horse...

Bo is experienced and well established so I usually jump him once a week during the week to keep my eye in as much as his, and then we'll go to a show twice a month probably on top of that.

Trike is less experienced, and also LOVES to jump, so he will jump at least once a week during the week andthen often do pole work in other sessions as well as going to a couple of shows a month. He is totally demoralising to try and ride on the flat if there is no jumping though

At the moment once a week, and that is at a show.
When the jumps come out at the yard it will probably be about twice, once at a show and then maybe a mess about with them or do some polework once

Depends on the horse.
I jump my youngster two or three times a week at home, as she needs it- usually gridwork though, sometimes a course of fences.

I only jump Tara at shows tbh, as she doesn't need it at home

If she hasn't competed for a while though we will jump her the day before a show. I also jump her if we do jumping in my lessons (once a fortnight atm).

The pony I am schooling at the minute is jumped on average 1-2 days per week. Once will be over a grid or just a single fence, the other time will be over a course - either at a show or at home.

As has been said it depends on the horse. My horse sometimes doesn't jump from one show to the next (we do roughly one show a week). Sometimes he pops a few a couple of days before a show & that's about it. He isn't a horse that needs alot of jumping.

Never jump Badger unless I'm at a competation or hunting... apart from some little XC jumps that get in my way out hacking but they don't really count! He seems to manage ok though..

I jump my horse about one a week, maybe even less. I only really school over jumps about once a month. The once a week is just really popping over a jump or two that is already out in the menage. In the summer I do tend to school him over jumps about once a fortnight though.

Dont really do any serious SJ competing though. Just pop to the odd local one in the summer. He jumps much better when he hasnt been jumped in a while.
