i have my new horse who came with a dressage saddle but I cant afford just yet to get a GP or a seperate jumping saddle just yet.

I have jumped a couple of times with the dressage saddle( only about 2'6 which is my maximum for now!)

i never felt insecure but did notice that my shorter stirrups made my needs slightly over the straight knee rolls.

Is it ok to jump in a dressage saddle just for the short term. I was hoping to pop a few small xc jumps but not sure if its wise.

Depends on if you feel safe enough really.

Not something i'd do as the saddle doesn't allow for the movement of the jump as much as a GP or jumping saddle, but then i have a young horse.

I wouldn't say you'd do too much harm keeping it small. If your horse is happy to jump in that saddle then crack on.

good point, my mare is 6 and she does make a really good shape over the jump. Dont want to ruin that.

I used to foxhunt in Passier Westphalian dressage saddle. It was one of the "olde school" saddles, fairly flat, minimal knee rolls and it worked well. Too many riders now depend on the saddle to hold them in vs. balance and a good seat.

Depending on how long it is going to take for you to save for a saddle, why don't you work on getting the basics absolutly spot on work on trot and canter poles, raised poles etc.... it'll improve flat work and her jumping in the long run, this can all be done easily in a dressage saddle then if you really have the bug for it, pop over a little jump at the end of the session.

A lot of people do jump in thier dressage saddles as they don't have another. It won't kill her. Just take it easy, you don't want to come off because your kness were over the front of the saddle. in the event she stops or runs out, then knock both of your confidences and then have to try and get it all back.

Any pic's of this nice new horse?

I jumped mine in my dressage saddle at home both sj at 1m and small xc while I waited for my jump saddle. And sometimes I pop my youngster over fences after a flat session. Perfectly fine!
