As per the title really, I’m looking for a jumping instructor in or around Bridgend. I haven’t had a lesson since before moving to the area a few months ago and am noticing now that my confidence isn’t quite what it was, leading to old bad habits creeping in. We do BE80s and I’m looking to move up to 90s so I’m after someone who can increase my confidence again but in a supportive and encouraging manner and without just sticking the jumps up sky high and expecting me to just get over them (as has happened in the past). Would be good if they can help me with both the jumping and the XC although I think any jumping tuition will help both as horse is naturally bold cross country. Can travel to them or them come to me. Any recommendations gratefully received. Thanks.

Nick Coles at Alps just off Jct 33. He's very good and will push you but not always the best if you're sensitive - he's very no nonsense. If you can deal with being shouted at and told you're c**p he'll soon stop you being c**p! Although he doesn't upset me, I find I need a more softly softly approach as the only bit I remember is the "you're c**p" and I started to believe it! You have to go to him, only about 20mins from Bridgend. He will stick them up though!

Sian Price in Coity. Not been to her myself but apparently good. Will travel I believe but has an excellent yard so better off going to her.

Another option would be a clinic with an instructor from further afield. Lydia Lucas goes to Alps about once a month and is very good. Tom Rowland also goes there about once a month. I've not had a lesson with him but I've heard very good things. Are you on Facebook? If so join Horses for Sale or Swap in Cardiff, they get advertised on there. They're not run by Alps they just hire it. A girl called Ellie Edwards organises the Tom Rowland ones and Janine Malone the Lydia Lucas ones if you want to look them up and ask them.

My riding club (Riders 2000) also do regular clinics, usually at Pencoed with a few different instructors. My favourite is Natalie Passmore. She's from Somerset and comes up as much as she can. She's the right mix of confidence building and pushing you. Richard Ayre - again from Somerset is the other one. We also do "club night" lessons once a month. This month is Rebecca Harris for jumping (very good fun although maybe better for the lower end of the spectrum) and Jan Evans for flat.

Have a look at our website as we have a camp coming up at Pencoed on the bank holiday weekend. It's full for camping but you can just book individual lessons (open to non-members). We have Matt Ryan doing XC and both Natalie and Richard doing jumping. Details here: http://www.riders2000rc.co.uk/PENCOED CAMP LETTER 2015.pdf

Hi, thanks for this, it's really helpful with lots of good suggestions. I've been and hired Sian's arena and one of the girls on the yard is going to organise lessons for a few of us with her so I'm really looking to seeing how that goes. Sounds like the clinics are deffo a good idea and I am on Facebook so I'll join the Horses for Sale or Swap group. Sounds like joining your club could be good option too. I just joined one of the other local ones (I shan't name it here) but am having very mixed feelings about it so far so perhaps a switch of allegiance would be in order. Definitely liking the idea of a Matt Ryan training session too... Thanks again.

Ernest Dillion used to go to Pencoed. Have a look an his web site. He's excellent. Area 35 (B.S.) also do some training days for all levels. You didn't have to be a member so may be worth a look on their web page.

No probs. PM me if you want any other details or just a chat. Ernest isn't in the area that much these days, maybe twice or three times a year between Pencoed and Sunnybank but he is very good.

Hello,

Not sure how far you've got in your search, but you could always give Terinna of Sunnybank a call, I've always found her a very good jump instructor (and flat as well). She would be happy leaving fences small if this is what is needed, but will also push when the time comes and has a variety of different exercises to help with different areas.

But who ever you decide to go to for lessons be sure to explain your situation as they aren't mind readers :)

Best of luck
