Jumping issues!!

Hi, I have a 15h 13year old welsh cob cross. Currently ride him in a twisted snaffle and drop noseband which is working well with my flatwork.

However, when it comes to jumping he gets a bit excited and tends to drop behind the bit (he's short coupled so finds shortening up very easy!) but when I put more leg on to get my contact back he launches over the jump, puts his head down and tanks off.

I'm really struggling to keep an even tempo round a course and its really starting to knock my confidence. Someone mentioned trying him in a Waterford but not sure, any advice?

Waterfords stop the horse leaning on the bit... not sure that would help in your case. Hopefully some more useful replies will come about!
Does he throw his head up when you're approaching the fence?

He really shortens up underneath himself, you can feel him bouncing underneath you but lose all contact at the front, has started putting his head up and fighting any contact.

He's awkward! lol giving him a longer rein and lighter contact and he drops below the bit, ride slightly shorter and he's started going above the bit. Can't keep a nice even contact and tempo when there's poles around! Lol

He is probably upset by the twisted bit pressing on the bars of his mouth and tongue, try something that is less sharp so he can be more comfortable and you can keep a contact. A waterford, although they are not always the nicest bits, would probably be better and less harsh.
