Decided to jump Senza last night, i haven't jumped her since my lesson which was nearly 3 weeks ago

My friend set up some grids to make the horses jump off their back ends from a trot.

Poor Senza found this really difficult bless her and was trying to throw herself over the jump to make it a bit easier for herself and she kept jumping the bounce as a spread

Then she got so hacked off with having to work so hard that she flew down the grid (which she was meant to do in trot

) jumped the bounce as a spread and procedded to sail straight over the school fence which my cousin was sitting on

At least i know she cant jump when she wants to i spose LOL

Took her back in and she done it properly. Then put an A-frame up at about 1.15 and she flew it so we left it there.

We did take all the poles away at one point though and the results weren't pretty so we ended up putting them back

sounds interesting

As she kept jumping the bounce as a spread did you not think about adjusting it? As its just teaching her naughty habits........

(im not having a go btw, as i think what youve done with her is fab!!) x

Oops

Sounds like she's making progress though - you should be very pleased with yourselves

Please can you tell Senza to have words with my horse - she tried to bounce a small spread last week

Are you going to carry on with the gridwork?

I didn't think about adjusting it actually

The other horse was doing it fine and Senza was probably doing it ok more than not but think i will make it wider next time round to make it a bit easier for her and like you say not teach her bad habits.

I am also still yet to find a bit that works with her. Even though she worked beautifully on the flat in the Myler my instructor said it was too harsh for jumping as it was causing her to hollow. So i changed to a rubber snaffle which has improved her technique but now i cant hold her

Ha ha horsey ah?? They will do anything to get out of a bit of hard work!!!

Yeah i will carry on with the grid work and i am also going to start using a lot more pole work on the flat too to get her hocks coming under her properly round corners etc.

She is still really unbalanced, especially on one rein and at the mo she is still trying to work out where to put her legs so the poles are really helping.

Think its going to take a lot of hard work though if i am honest. And i probably dont jump as much as i should

ah i see! i hope you dont mind me asking - i didnt want to seem like i was having a go.

Perhaps next time change the striding for her tho

How about a waterford for jumping?

I was going to suggest waterford as well!
And don't worry about not jumping often, I'm only jumping mine properly every fortnight, then playing around with poles and very small jumps on the alternate weeks. I think it's very easy to overdo the jumping when they're young, far better to take it slowly with her.

No i dont mind you saying it at all. To be honest i didn't even think about changing the striding coz the other horse was ok with it

I'm such a bad mummy LOL. Will change it next time though to help her out a bit until she is more balanced.

Will look up Waterfords, what are they like?? I have never used anything other than a plan snaffle before so am a bit useless when it comes to bits.

I knew Senza would be the horse to test me and teach me loads

Yeah i am a great believer of not pushing young horses either but i just think she needs a bit more to keep on top of it if you know what i mean.

Its down to laziness with me though as i have no-one on the ground to do the jumps for me and it stresses me out keep getting on and off which then winds Senza up so i usually just leave the jumping til someone is free to lend a helping hand.

Thanks PG, just brought one off of ebay to try out.

Will only use it for jumping though as i am happy with the way she is going in the rubber snaffle for flat work at the mo.

Ooh get her lol...was you riding her when she jumped out the school or was it loose schooling?? Ive used a waterford snaffle on my old mare and she went quite well in it, they may look a bit harsh but arnt really..:)

No i was on her LOL!!

All the blood drained from my cousins face as Senza just sailed over the fence right next to her. I know it was naughty but i was cracking up!!!!

highly recommend loose ring waterford, that what i use for gg in sign, one jumping sj. As he leans, then takes hold, then peeeeeeeee off with head between knees - in snaffle. Got him so he doesn't pee off but does get very bouncy, bouncy but that's cos he wants to jump.

She doesn't so much lean or tank as such she just rushes as she is still very unbalanced and she thinks the only way she will get over the fence is to launch herself at it so i just need something that i can persuade her to not rush so much in.

My biggest fear is that she will start jumping hollow again as we are only just starting to get out of that from the Myler.

waterford is ideal promise.... what i have to do is 3 stride out calmly lift gg head with very small outside rein movement (i think LIFT YOUR, BL00dy head UP). This allow target system to lock on and then rushing stops.
The other thing i would suggest is pole work to improve you paces with a pace which is why i do alot of flatwork with this one and have seen a dramaic improvement in his jumping as i become more confindent in be able to move the pace around from collect to working back to collected.
