everyone has a different technique...

but how do you get more confident to give more with your hands
and when your jumping a speedy pony, and cant truly see a stride, i normally let her sort herself out... but by doing this my position goes a bit tits up
i need also some tips on how to make sure you fold at the hips and put your bum back.. rather than just standing up in the stirrups

just general jumping position tips please

xx

Once I put 100% trust into Doug or Oliver that they would both go over the jump my position improved a lot. I always used to stand in my stirrups and sort of pull them over the jump rather than push them over the jump. You need to give with your hands to make them stretch over the jump, once this is achieved you will feel more confident and flyyyy

Have you seen Oliver jump?!

"Tank" isnt even in his dictionary he bolts as fast as possible towards the jump, you physically can not pull him out or stop until he is over it. I was pretty much cacking my pants to start with, but I now know that he will go over anything at any height so am able to relax, fold and stretch over the jump with him. I also find jumping bigger gives me a better position

thats a good idea actually, never thought of that :P

its easier when the jumps are bigger, and at home/training it feels more smooth; its just at competitions i think

wilma bounces sideways into it after shes jumped it a couple of times, but only if its one jump... its impossible to get her to canter round the corner and into it, i literally go walk to canter 3 strides in and bounce sideways :L:L

she has never tanked into a fence, but used to tank out... but ive sorted that now but something is still holding me back :S:S

My position improved from the moment I got Pickle, as I totally trust him, he is VERY genuine will go over anything (fillers/XC fences etc) its not always very stylish but I think trust is a big factor, also nerves make you tense up and position goes to pot.

on my pony i always grab a chunk of mane at take off so i leave him alone over the fence it also helps seeing a stride if i'm thinking about grabbing his mane. you shouldn't really force yourself to fold forwards you have to let the horse come up to you rather than throwing yourself forwards so if its a small fence you should barely go forwards at all just allow yourself to stay relaxed over the fence, easier said than done i know but it also means you recover alot quicker the other side so you can get control again quicker

If u are finding it hard to Give with the reins when jumping, why not try exercises where u approach the jump in the jumping posiiton with ur hands forward on a neck strap, that always helps, and to ensure u fold at the Hip and dont just stand up in ur stirrups, when taking off, try not to think about standing up, instead just put all of ur weight down into ur heel and tilt forward a bit, that way, when the horse leans forward ur upper body will follow, keeping ur lower body secure and close to the saddle..Hope this makes sense and isnt just a load of gobldigook

ndubz, that makes sense, but how far away do you go into jumping position... because i will worry about the speed as soon as i tip forward, and if shes being an idiot, i need to sit deep to contain her...

ellie, ill concentrate on that...

wilma normally goes a bit silly with poles/gridwork in our arena cos its massivee... plenty of room to gallop around..

i may have to do it in the smaller school

i can do a jumping position/light seat when in canter out hacking, so should be able to do it for jumping

Out of interest do you only ever have poles/jumps in the school if your jumping? Sometimes it can be helpful to just take the horse in the school with jumps/poles around but just school around them, so they learn that it doesn't always mean jumping today lets go.

we have the jumps set out as a course once a month for a week; so i school her around them a couple of times, and jump her a couple of times in that week

i may chuck some poles out after dressage stuff has been put away...

hardly anyone jumps at the yard though :s

that's a good idea on a horse that doesn't stop but having a stopper myself i have to stay sat up until he leaves the ground if i go forwards in front of the fence he'll stop, don't know if ds's is like that but it could be a bit risky unless in a grid with placing poles etc

I read on here about a instructor teaching kids to fold as if there was another pole on the top holes so you had to duck under neathe it to fit, so you then had to fold from your hips and put weight down in your heels to fit under , and make sure your hands were not in the way of your body or you wuoldnt be able to duck far enough !
It worked for me

and when the jumps get bigger just try to remember how it felt over the smaller fences
