I've not been to sj since I was a kid, (used to go sj with my loan pony many years ago) got my horse last year I am hoping this year to go in for a clear round at a local riding club... Thing is I am worried about a.. Remembering order of jumps, and b, how my horse will react being in that environment... I took him to watch last year as as soon as he was out of sight of his friends (we hacked there) he had a paddy.. So I'm thinking if I go early on my own before it gets busy would be the best idea.... Maybe I'm just worrying over nothing.. How does everyone remember a jumping course? So worried I'd forget having lots to think about..

I normally start of with the clear round with a small height that I know that me and the horse are comfortable with and if everything is fine in that then go in the competition, no one really watches the clear round so it doesn't give you much to worry about.
Good luck :)

How i usualy remember them is walk the course, then stand in the middle of the course pointing at the jumps in order then (here comes the embarrassing part) i actually walk the course as in, stand there either in the car park or wherever theres free space and imagine miniature jumps around me and just walk about jumping them and looking at the next jump as i land :o then i get on horse and walk about on the horse as if i was in the ring going over the jumps so basically just practising the turns and approaches but all in walk. Then when i go in the ring all i try to remember is the first jump, thats it, once i've gone over the first jump i always seem to know where to go without thinking about it :) Good luck and rebember to have fun! :)

I am aiming to start small clear round (horse is perfectly capable) and not do sj untill I have more confidence... I think if I don't expect anything we might do ok lol just the worry of him having a paddy in the middle of it and/or forgetting the course I'm not the most confident person when I'm being watched (on my own I've jumped 2"6 on him :-) happily... But an audience and I panic... About everything!

I used to have that problem! Any person watching me i would get nervous and panic and forget the course, what helped me is ride while listening to my ipod with people watching, then progress to ride while humming something and just focus on whats in front of you and the humming or singing in your head with the audience, now i can easily block out everyone and that way not get nervous (its not so great if i'm having a lesson:o )
