I need to buy a saddle for my Branded BWB Anna (the bay in sig), I have a competition rider from the UK due to start working for me out in Norway in less than a month and although Anna has 2 stunning Kieffer dressage saddles she has no jumping saddle. So I had better get my act together quick before he gets here

Requirements:

My mare is being built back up from a poor state (bought in the condition below now has a bit more muscle and topline as has been in daily training with good feeding plan for a month and a half), so a tree with the ability to alter (like the Kieffers) or gullet change system would be best suited. Extrememly high withered mare needing a cut back head with muscle wastage so not so easy to find a make that can be quickly altered.

Any ideas would be so well received as I am at a loss, my ideal would be to buy a bates but she has such a high wither I really cant see that option being possible.

Before you all shout 'Saddle Fitter', there is only one qualified saddle fitter in Norway and he lives 12 hours away so not quite as easy as in the UK...

We have a horse with similar issues and also huge scapulas, found that Bates saddles did not fit him.
We are currently using an Albion K2 GP (straightforward medium fitting) as his jumping saddle as it sits nicely and does not interfere with his shoulders. He goes pretty much as well in this as in his dressage saddle.
We got the dressage saddle from saddles direct who will send you up to (I think) 9 to try, we got 4 ranging in fitting from medium wide to extra wide, problem being some of the ones that were 'named' as wider than others were in fact narrower, being different makes.
Best of luck, try and see what your horse finds comfortable. Are there lots of horses where he will be kept? If so you may be able to try a few on and then buy the same make and model if you find one that fits.

i think that any high-withered horse with muscle wastage is probably best wearing some kind of prolite pad or similar under the saddle - if horse fills out enough you can always remove it.

there aren't many saddles which can be adjusted without a saddler - and if bates don't fit then I can't think of much elase that can be changed by us normal folk. Kieffer are adjustable, but generally requires someone trained to do it. I'm not a big fan of their jumping saddles either.

I am using a black country jumping saddle on my mare at the moment, and have to say it does fit very nicely. It's not the most beautiful of saddles, but it does fit high withered mare well. Unlike most CC's it has 'trapezius' panels, which lift it away from the wither.. and is wool flocked so ultimately a lot more adjustable than most.

Other than that, Butet and Stubbens fitted well on mare... ideal saddles are also v good for high withers, and can be made to measure.

My TBx mare has fairly high withers and her jumping saddle is Stubben Siegfried CS. It seems to fit her well and she's always gone nicely in it.

We had an Omega made to measure for our high withered horse, he need a wide tree, but lots of padding, so the front had an extra gusset shape built in.
