After a break from jumping I’m slowly getting back in to it, and thinking of getting a jumping saddle. Is it worthwhile at this level and what saddle would you recommend (not a huge budget)? I currently use a GP to jump, but I have very long legs and the length of my stirrups for jumping means my knees are virtually in line with the front of the saddle (an inch more and my knee would be over the front flaps!). I don’t use my GP for anything else as I hack out in my dressage saddle. I’ve never bought a jump saddle before so any advice would be much appreciated.

Definitely worth looking at... the only thing I can advise is sit in as many as possible to decide whether you like big blocks/small blocks, flat seat/deep seat etc....

i have a forward cut jumping saddle as my day to day saddle - just ordered a dressage saddle though as i do find it doesn't help me on with schooling in longer stirrups (and believe you me i need all the help i can get

i love mine - it has a relatively flat seat with square cantel - great for drops etc for xc - and movable thigh blocks - and large top knee rolls - all made to measure for me and hoss! also really comfey for hunting in. not as close contact as some as hoss had back issues (hence having to go M2M as it has dropped panels etc for her shape) also helps me with her rather large leap of faith she sometimes puts in

Wouldn't jumping without now

Also have stupidly long legs (stupider long thighs to make things difficult...) and love my bates - moveable knee & thigh blocks! And means I can jump jockey-style if I like... I need to remember to put more holes in my leathers actually, they don't -quite- go short enough yet!

In a similar position to you, except I have a VSD so my knees were very much over the front, and I felt a plonker quite apart from my dreadful position over a jump.
Have borrowed a monoflap with huge knee and thigh blocks. Sadly, my position is apparently no better (:o) but I do find it an awful lot more secure, and I got less tired XC too. Had never ridden with big blocks and thought I'd hate the restriction, but actually quite like it. Thought I'd like the "closeness" of the monoflap, and I do...

i have the same issues as you-normal height(5'7) but all of that is my thigh bone apparently! so i cant jump in GP's.

i havent jumped for many moons, but just getting my youngster a jumping saddles so we can do some teeny tiny trailblazers type stuff as a break from stressage.

i seem to prefer flat seat, medium blocks but am not fussed on mono V normal flaps.

You could be talking about me! I love my Bates too and have long thighs in relation to my height. although I am 5'9

I've got the Bates Momentum, and it's wonderful. But if you like a deep seat, and big fixed knee blocks you'd probably hate it.

Best advice is to try loads of different ones and see what suits you best.

Thanks. It seems to make sense to get one, I feel I should have my stirrups a hole or 2 shorter for a bit more security, but can't because of my knees going off the front of the saddle. Shopping me thinks !

my knees go off the front of the saddle regardless of how forward cut!

if you have very long legs you may find you will have to ride with your legs over the front of the saddle to make sure the saddle doesn't impact on the horse's shoulder movement.

Mark Todd rides with his knees off the front of the saddle and if he can manage, i am sure i can!
