Hi i want some advice on jumping my crazy mare
we used to jump quite big 1m10 (wel big 4 me anyway

) then because of lack of facilities stopped and we havnt jumped for about a year
i really want to start jumping her again and i will bring her back into it slowly but the problem is that she gets so excited she rushes at small jumps and im not confident enough yet to jump bigger
and trotting poles are a no no because she jumps them

does anyone have any ideas to get her back into jumping steadily?

Maybe try doing some grids, and schooling around jumps not necessarily jumping them.
Also you could try and get an instructor up (if you haven't already got one) because they will be able to to see whats going wrong on foot and help you through it

Ahh I know a pony that does that. That's why schooling around jumps is good for him, as he learn't he didn't have to rush when ever a jump was near etc.

Yeah get your instructor up he/she should be able to help massively.

have you tried just having a few smaller fences up in the school and popping over them as part of your flatwork schooling session? Work her as if they're not there and then just trot or canter over them as they fit in on a circle or an angle.

I used to have to do this with mine A LOT because she got so excited. It didn't transform her but did help to calm her down and get her to start jumping out of a consistent steady rhythm again.

why not start her off on thelunge?...then start putting poles infront...
this is how introduced my big boy to jumping and then when he hadnt jumped for a while did it again before i got on board...he sorted himself out without having to worry about a rider!!

What's she like cross country? I had a (well still have him) crazy pony who rushed madly (once he'd decided to do it) at all fences i think he actually panicked but going cross country he was better as getting him into a nice balanced gallop not only seemed to relax him but think it took his mind off jumping and tired him a little. I would also suggest another bit so you have control coming towards your fences and practice combinations where you have to lengthen and shorten your strides - makes both of you work. Do exercises so she has to listen to what YOU want her to do and can't always anticipate what's coming next.

The problem with my pony was he anticipated everything and got himself in a right state but his problem was he wouldn't actually go towards a fence then he would plunge and be off and it was hell for leather or nothing at all. I changed him to a rubber pelham without a curb (he was vv sensitive in curb) this did give me a lot more control which funnily I think gave him more confidence and improved his jumping.

never dared try cross country usually jump in a loose ring snaffle in the school and im scared of trying her in a pelham incase i catch her mouth if i get left behind have got a waterford gag that she goes really well in but some people have gasped and said thats such a strong bit but tabs seems fine in it and i only have it on the second loop and i dont yank her in the mouth or anything
