I jumped Bill today for the first time!!
Got him to about 2'6,then we decided to cool him down.
Reason was that when im trotting him to the jump,he sees it and
canters REALLY fast upto it and is hard to slow down to the next jump.
He snorts (i dont know what else to call it) and puts his head down and goes realy fast.

How can I stop him running away from me and get him back quick?
Im jumping tomorrow,so help is really needed

ok thanks!!
He isnt a jumper,he's dressage so he's really hot headed when he sees a jump. I asked him to go across the center line, and i asked him to go round the jump, but instead...
he decided to jump the 4foot wings..he's over keen.
Its putting me off abit....well.
Not really, but it was annoying me because he was getting out of control!!

Try just schooling around jumps, don't let him jump them though. Or try walking on the approach to the jump, walk and halt at random points, then ask for trot a few strides away. Jump, then immediatly on landing ask for halt.

I'd suggest lots and lots of schooling - transitions, lateral work etc etc around the jumps, as well as pulling up straight after the jump.

Some horses always will put on the power towards a jump.

Assuming back/teeth/tack etc is OK, it's probably just an issue of excitement which lots of schooling around and over th jumps will help. Make sure you don't crash land on his back or pull his mouth as you go over/land, as this could make him rush.

Also, he probably finds it easier to jump that height at canter, so a steady canter from a longer distance away, with a small-ish circle in front of the jump, plus pulling up a few strides after may help.

Shadow used to do the same! As others have said school him around the jumps without jumping them.
You could also try:
*Approach in walk and ask for trot/canter a few strides before the jump.
*Approach in trot or canter and if he speeds up circle away.
*Bring him back to walk a few strides after the jump.
*Put three jumps in a fan shape and alternate which one you jump.
*Put a jump in the middle of the school and trot over in in a figure of eight and circle if he gets too fast.
*Trot or canter poles before and after the jump.
*Gridwork.
