Found my big 18.2 lad with a bad cut on his knee. Didnt look good and he wouldnt weight bear on it at all. Left a freind with him whilst I phoned vet and went for trailer, as he was as far away in 40 acres as what he could be. Got him in trailer ,back to yard, vet confirmed my fear he had fractured it. We had two options, tp pts there and then, or immobilise him for 4 days, then xray when swelling has gone down, and see how bad the damage is. No doubt on which option to take, but he isnt the sensibilst horses and I was concerned on how to keep him still. We splinted it, bandaged and padded really well, vet gave him antibiotic. I decided to put him in a box with 20 bales of straw stacked up so he cant really move or lie down(biggest worry). He is now eating his haynet and licking his new stable lick, but looks very sorry for himself. On 5 acps am and eve to try and quieten him, and antibiotic twice daily and wait for Wed to come. Please say a prayer for him tonight guys, really appreciate it.

I'll be thinking of you. My boy fractured his radius above the knee and was cross tied in a Robert Jones bandage for about 3 months. It did heal eventually. It is amazing how they adapt to being on box rest - I gave him his hay in a haylage net so it lasted him longer. I left a sack of carrots outside his door so anyone walking past would give him a carrot to keep him interested and I just spent ages grooming and fussing him so he still felt loved.

I hope it works out for the best - do keep us posted.

Big hugs for your big lad.

Sending very special prayers for your big boy tonight. We have had 2 horses here over the years with fractures who have both made a full recovery

Fingers crossed for you. Can you not cross tie him to stop him lying down, which is the biggest risk I know. Our pony was cross tied for 3 months after a stifle fracture. She was on acp throughout but coped ok and is now fine. Loads of positive vibes coming your way.

Im so sorry, know exactly how you feel, found my boy in the same way last November. He had fractured his Radius and had a large cut near his carpal sheath. Thought there was no chance but vet xrayed straight away, put it in a splint and took him straight to Leahurst to have it flushed. Fortunately there was no infection but he spent about 10 weeks cross tied and a further 6 weeks box rest. He is absolutely fine now.
I bought the rubber trailer ties from Robbinsons and cross tied him in a very padded headcollar at the stable door, gave him constant haylage in small holed nets, licks, water in a overdoor manger and left a radio on. He did lie down somehow?? on a number of occasions but got away with it.

Fingers crossed everything will work out, thinking of you.

Seems ok today, had loads of attention and managing to tap door with his bad leg! Cant risk cross tying him as he is a bit of a clown and prob break his neck trying to get free. Hopefully the splint will stop him doing to much and he will use the bit of brain he has to realise I am trying my best and he has got to help. He is so big, but really soft and loves people, just really clumsy and dopey! Will be saying prayers again tonight, and hoping luck is on his side.

So sorry to hear about your boy fracturing his leg. I'm wishing you both positive thoughts. I went through a similar thing with my 17.3hh horse when he fractured his coffin joint. He was on box rest for 9 months. My insurance company agreed to pay for homeopathy, pulsed magnetic therapy, physio etc. If I can be of any help then PM me.

Best wishes

Oh lordy you poor thing- what a thing to happen!.

Its a very good idea stacking straw around the stable so he cant lay down as an alternative to cross tying so will keep that in mind if i hear of anyone else needing it.

My horse has been in box rest for 6 weeks and she been an angel but her injury isnt as serious as your boy.

Im sending you in the good luck vibes i can im hoping and praying that he improves.

As i founds its hard to stay positive when its your own horses but take heart in others good endings.

love to you and your poor horse- let us kno how he gets on wont you?
