It isn't clear to me. As usual there is no transparancy or clarity as to how these teams are selected.
As far as I am aware Will had just one placing at the 4 day trials with Clark. (9th) I am not aware that he has even jumped at a YR CSIO (further trial) either this year.
Please don't get me wrong, Will Whit is fantastic. BUT why bother having a selection Policy.

I've just looked on the BSJA website and seen that there are not a lot of qualifying events in which they were able to gain their FEI qualification. Don't know if this also applied last year.

I should think that Dan's junior form automatically qualified him and Will has been jumping prettty good on the continent and shouldnt that Australian outing have qualified all the riders? Surely any long listed riders would have been directed at the qualifying events as they do with the eventers. its all part of the BEF system isnt it?
However I do agree with Freshman about clarity. Everyone would be much happier if things were clear and not just with show jumping either.
But i do think Will Whitaker could probably get a clear round out of a beach donkey......

I agree with all of what you say Lucretia. However selection Policy states that you must perform well at the trials then when selected for CSIO's you take the horse you are putting forward for the Championships in the biggest class of the day over the duration of the show. This is not happening. Many of the riders selected from both groups did well at the trials yet are selected on different horses for the championships. I feel it is only right to point out in particular that only Joe Claayton was consistent on the same horse throughout. Nicole Pavitt was also showing true consistency throughout. I know most of these riders & really do not have a gripe with any of them. I really wish all of them the best at the championships. BUT what I do want as a fee paying member is clarity throughout all teams, right to the very top end. It just does not happen. Which is why so many of us drop out from the system.

i completely agree with u freshman...I think its a shame Nicole hasnt been selected and I think Dans horse wasnt right in Hagen. i watched the YR jump the nations cup in wierden which was Joe, Matt, Tim and Sam hutton and they all jumped super, finishing on only 4 faults with the dutch winning on 0.
However I think it will never be equal all the way through. just look at the team for rotterdam...

The whole thing is so unfair Nicole jumped fantastic at the trials along with lots of others so whats the point in having trials. Will didnt have a good trial show but is picked im not knocking Will as he is fantastic but is really is not fair when others jumped well and didnt get picked ,alot of time effort and money is wasted .

Just an observation but.

everytime there is a post about team selections there are people upset at the selection choices and can't understand the rationale. Can you not challenge or voice your thoughts to the BSJA to try and make the process more transparent.

I do agree its quite amazing the average age of our older teams and as has been said where are the teams of the future if no-one gets a fair crack of the whip.

Surely its in the BSJA long term survival interests to attract more top riders into the teams for owners if nothing else, why would you fund a horse if you never have a chance of being team selected unless you place it with a whitaker ??

I believe it is fair to say that some of the above have directed their comments at the BSJA directly already. Much as i admire Will i do agree it seems unfair but I am no expert on YR selections and the trials for that in showjumping. In eventing it seems to be much clearer. I think maybe it would be good if the senior team failed to qualify for a major championship as has happened to the French who had tyo really take a good look at their selection processes and look at them in the last year. they sent three GIRLS (heaven forbid) to their crucial nations cup match in zagreb which they needed to win to get back in the super league, a descision that was repaid this weekend when Penelope leprevost won them the Rotterdam Nations Cup, changed their Chef, and now have among their team regulars, several younger riders e.g. Kevin Staut (30), Penelope (same). But it took an Olympic games without competing to make them sort it out.

What you say is very true Lucretia. Many people feel that Derek R should have been replaced after Bejing. No other sport would keep accepting these failures. This is not the first year though that a rider has not had a good trials, nor competed at an 'O' on a team yet still goes on to ride at Championships. It is a case of Put up or Shut up. Or as many do, Pull Out & use the time & money that would have been spent on other things.
