Well its currently 2 degrees outside and freezing...........my t|B is out 24/7 in a MW with neck and up untill 630pm when it was getting cold she felt snug and toasty. They have alot of hedge/trees for shelter. However its really dropped and am now worrying if shes warm enough......i haven't given them hay yet as still a fair bit of grazing left. Ordering hay next week and starting them on that in large haylage type nets, problem is my fat cob who she lives with - shes not as thin as i would like (a bit porky) very fluffy and hogged and naked!! shes really warm. Bit concerned about the cob eating too much and getting fatter whilst trying to maintain the TBs condition!!
The cob gets a sprinkle of happy hoof and a few carrots whilst the TB is on 2 feeds a day - barley, sugar-beet and chaff. Shes a nice weight under her rug and seems to be maintaining it.

I don't want to over rug her just yet so may hold out till at least December (unless its minus) till i pop a blanket underneath. She also has a proper quilted combo under rug for when its really cold plus a selection of thermatex rugs and fleeces and stable rugs of varying weights!!

What are your horses in? (TBs especially) in these tempretures.

Im annoyed at my phone telling me earlier that it was going to be a minimum of 8 tonight,so i didnt put a light weight on mine.then im on way back from work tonight and the car computer was saying it was 4. Thn checked my phone and it said it was currently 3.
Im probs being daft but i like to put a l/w on if its under 5

My tb who is soft beyond extreme is in her mw with neck and is toasty, I was worrying about her being cold on a night and asked a fellow livery what her FOUR tb's are in and they are all in mw and this is from someone who DOES coddle her horses and over rug. I also have a friend who's tb wasnt in a rug at all recently and is only just now in a lw/ rainsheet with no neck but imo she is harsh on her horsie :-)

My TB is fully clipped out and is in his stable with a 360g h/w full neck rug on.
Hopefully he will be warm enough!! Maybe I should have put a fleece under it??

Tb, with a blanket clip is in & in a 150g rug, such a fluffy rug. Shes also in a back stable, so she will be toasty

Flippin' warm here in Kent tonight. Must be 12 or possibly higher, and foggy. Mine are out naked. But I am a cruel heartless owner!

well my tb is in with a polar fleece combo on. he usually keeps his mw on but fold the neck back but i rode and he was warm so hes prob now freezing o well he has haylage and straw bed to keep him warm!! in mw combo during day. hes being blanket clipped next week so hw will be used then if still this cold

TB is out in the day with m/w on and gets brought in around 6pm, rug changed to a m/w quilted one. Other horse (trotter x cob x something?) is out without a rug unless freezing and at night only wears a rug if its really really cold! TB is fed just pony nuts, chaff and a few carrots and other one gets the tiniest amount of safe and sound.. both seem ok!

My TB is unclipped, out 24/7 and is out in just a rain sheet. He's only had this on for the last week as he's quite a hardy soul and gets too hot if I put anything else on him at the moment. I had his mediumweight rug cleaned months ago in preparation but I haven't been able to use it yet. He used to get too hot in his fly rug in the summer!
Another TB on our yard has a heavyweight on as she feels the cold. They are all individuals, even horses with the same breeding can't be treated the same.

Goodness... where are you??
In Herts is really mild! I dont think it went below 10 degrees last night, my boy was naked in his stable.

I wouldn't be worried, your horse is in a full neck M/W? save the H/W for artic conditions!!

Both are stabled, the old girl is in a MW but she's fully clipped as she suffers from really itchy skin, esp when she gets hot- which she does pretty easily. Saving the layering/heavier stuff for the arctic conditions! Out today in MW turnout- youngster also stabled, I'm such a cruel mummy as he's naked (but is a full, unclipped and increasingly wooley section d!) he will only have a thin rug on when it gets really cool and wet, so he doesn't get a chill :)

All out 24/7 and naked at the mo (Bedfordshire). It's really mild here at the minute and according to the weather forecast (which I know isn't always correct!) it will be that way for the next little while.

None of ours are clipped but I did put a l/w on the two horses last week during the few nights that it dropped down to about 3C. I know they could manage rugless but Noah is tricky to keep weight on, so I'd prefer he didn't waste energy trying to keep warm, and Belle is sometimes a little bit wussy.

It was really cold here last night, my fully clipped girly had her mw stable rug with mw turnout with full neck on top. She is in a very exposed stable :-(

My mare is in the stable with a 100g in during the day and a 200g underquilt added when the temp drops (we have ahd frost a few mornings) and if it mildens up shes rugless during the day with the 200g on at night.

My gelding had a 240g combo on when turned out but he has a full clip and a 200g on in a thick straw bed in the stable at night.

Put a half neck shires (tempest i think) on a day ago. Probabally over rugging, bur has got arab in him and hates the rain! Planning on getting a small clip. Ultimatly it's up to his owner really.

There is a mix of horses here mostly warmbloods and TB's, all living out and are now having big bales of hay. All unrugged and should stay like that al winter. They do have shelters though and those who are not already being fed will have hard feed as well very soon.

I have a T/B/Trotter ex racehorse in France who spent her first winter out 24/7 last year. I bought a HW rug when I was in England in the October and saw so many horses in the fields already rugged and never used it in the end. She had a field shelter and plenty of hay and was out in rain, snow and down to -10°C, no extra feed and she was absolutly fine and didn't even get that hairy. In our yard it's the horses that are stabled at night that have rugs in the day and all those out 24/7 have no rugs. I think there is much more mollycoddling in the UK.

-2C, all out, and staying out, most unrugged, tb's have their heads installed in round bales and are wearing LWs.

That reminds me, I left the hosepipes out last night:( they'll be frozen for a while today then.

lusitano-unclipped and naked

exmoor ponies, unclipped and naked (obviously)

we are all up a hill in Scotland. there is a shelter which they only use to get away from flies and plenty of grass, no hay in field yet.

One of mine is fully clipped including legs he is in and in a heavy weight stable with neck. Two of them are fully clipped (legs left on) and they are in heavy weights with necks and one who is unclipped has a m/w with no neck.
They all have rugs changed in a morning clipped horses in m/w with no necks and unclipped in a l/w or naked.
