had a scan today on my mare, was running with the stallion 4 a couple mths in summer, anyway wen i got her bk from stud he said yep in foal off u go , {and yes it is a conveil belt stud } well more like a farmer with a nice stallion, so this was 3 mths ago had a scan today and surprise no foal ... hmmm , rang the stud, and he said oh ok return her free next year, ok but wheres my foal gone , ?? do u think she absorbed it , or there wasnt one there to begin with i wounder, anyway , wat with that and my loan horse going bk im feeling pretty empty and sorry 4 myself... nag over ....

that rather depends on how the farmer with the nice stallion could be so certain that she was in foal. Was she scanned? You could have expected a vets bill for that.

Seems a bit hit and miss and not how I would be doing things - friend of mine ran her mare with a stallion and took her back apparently not in foal - that non existent foal finally arrived 4 weeks ago with very little notice, I'm not sure which is worse.

Good point, I just presumed she was scanned.

The scan is imperative, firstly to determine if the mare is in foal and secondly to ensure that twins are not present, or to give you time to deal with them if they are. If you go to the breeding section of this forum you will find loads of useful advice from many people, a good many of whom are expert and are dealing with this kind of thing every day.
If you have a no foal free return deal with this farmer (assuming you have paid) you will need to pin him down a little more firmly in the spring. If it was no foal, no fee, I would be tempted to go elsewhere

my mare had a foal off this stallion 18mths ago and hes a well known whipper in at the local hunt and always busy with his stallion the price i paid was 4 a scan included, and he said she was in foal , i dunno, he said i could have a free return next year and be first in , so im gonna think about it or i get my money bk and have a , A I next year , as i miss her wen she goes ther ....
