i have been out of riding for bout 2 - 3 years now. i would like to start again, i may look into gettin a horse of my own if someone could put an average price on keeping a horse and give me some general advise on keepin a horse.
I don't think prices have changed that much from 2 -3 years ago. Hay has gone up this year as expected and I believe some people are having trouble getting shavings but generally it would be same.
The BHS website has two PDFs that you may find useful. One is a guide to owning a horse and the other is the costs involved with owning your own horse.
Obviously the prices stated are just a rough guide as costs generally depend on the horses needs and also where abouts in the country you are located, as prices can differ drastically.
I have a small livery yard at my home and the liveries pay the following: £25 per wk DIY for stable, grazing and use of the school whenever they like. I make my own big round bale haylage which I charge them £6 per horse which lasts at the moment 7 days with 6 horses on 1 bale but if you use small hay bales they are about £4.50 per bale and you will probably use 3-4 bales per week depending on horse size and grazing levels. Straw I supply the very big quadrant bales at £20 this lasts 3wks per horse or if you use small bale straw it is about £3.25 per bale and you would use about 3-4 bales per wk or shavings around £6.50 per bale and prob use 3 bales per wk. Hard feed, 1 bag of mollichaff is about £4.50 lasts around a wk, 1 bag of non- heating course mix is £6.50 ish per wk 1 bag of fibre nuts £5.50 ish per wk this all depends on what the horse is doing well on with the current owners and its work load when you own it!! Farrier £65 every 6 wks. worming every 3 months around £14. I hope this gives you an insight into the weekly costs but it is only a guide line.
thankyou everone youve given me a good idea of owning a horse, now i have had a bit of guidance i will look at putting it into practice. once again thankyou
