We had a very scary incident in the trailer with my lovely mare who was travelling with a friends pony. We had been for a super hack and had loaded to go home, it felt like my trailer was tipping / dragging backwards when I went to set off. Two seconds later and my mare was on the floor with her legs under the partitions tangled between the pony’s legs. The scrambling to get back up was just awful and we were watching it all on my camera
Jumped out and got them both off, superficial cuts to my friends pony’s legs and my girl was obviously distressed. Whilst my friend held both horses, I took out all the partitions / poles and put them in the back of my car. We tacked up friends pony for her to start the ride home and I loaded my mare (thankfully I have cross ties in for emergencies). Got my mare home and then came back for friend and pony.
All ok, but obviously confidence lost / vets examinations carried out (PSD in right hind
) and treatment / rest given.
Have spent the last couple of weeks building my mares confidence with going into the trailer, switched her to travelling behind the passenger side so she can balance better on the right hind and with my vets agreement we have travelled her on short trips.
Today, I took her to a local off road riding area (only 10 mins down the road) and we tacked up and had a lovely hack with my hubbie and two pupsters. All stress free and she was wonderful.
Feeling very proud of her and relived all was ok
I’ve bought some full length breast / breech bars and if there is a slight indication she is not steady in the trailer, then the partitions will come out and that will be that.
